Politicians and Sports stars unite to Fight Against homelessness

Galway Man Leads 1000 Mile Run for Home

Dublin Tuesday 11th October 2011- Politicians and sports starts turned out this morning to help Galway man Paul Fallon launch a 1000 mile round Ireland run for homelessness. Taking place during the month of December the ‘1000 Mile Run for Home’ will raise funds for On the Run Again, a 24 week personal development programme which helps homeless people rehabilitate back into society through participation in a tailored running program.

Pledging their support was John Treacy, CEO of the Irish Sports Council , FG Senator Fidelma Healy Eames, Roscommon TD, Luke ‘Ming’ Flanagan and Galway West TD’s, Brian Walsh (FG) & Derek Nolan (Labour).

Beginning in Dublin on December 1st, Paul will run an average of 33miles per day, including Christmas Day and he will finish in Galway on New Year’s Eve.

Supporting Paul on the run will be politicians, celebrities and local people who will run or walk one mile at one of eight different locations throughout the country including Dublin, Galway, Cork, Limerick, Kilkenny, Athlone, Sligo and Castlebar. Paul hopes to have 1000 people sign up to run or walk a mile and for each person to commit to raise a minimum of €100.
“The 1000 Mile Run for Home aims to raise a minimum of €100,000 euro – which we hope will go a long way to keeping people off the streets by enlisting them in the On the Road Programme,” said Paul.
“We are currently piloting the programme in Galway and the results are very positive. The cost for one person to be included in the ‘On The Road Again’ program for 24 weeks is approximately €1250. This is a fraction of what it costs the state to tackle this problem which is estimated at between €24, 000 and €27,000 per person.”

A non-profit organization, On the Road Again was established in January 2011. The 24 week pilot programme concludes on November 26th. On the Road Again plans to expand to other locations around the country in 2012.

I've never been much good with names of runners Krusty, but if it is the baldy in the Mizuno's that you are referring to, yes, that is indeed me

Well, less than one month from now I’ll be heading off on my little 1000 mile run around the country!

To date, training has been ok, if not ideal. Peaked so far at 112.75mls for the week, averaged 100+ for the past 8wks now. Have got one 32ml run under my belt, one 30ml run, one 28.5, one 27.5 and a bunch of ‘shorter’ one’s in the 22-25ml range. So I am confident enough leading into it. I am recovering ok which is a good sign.

Thanks to Evergreen Health Food stores, I am eating the correct foods, lots of porridge with all sorts of seeds, nuts & raisins. I also have Ruth Kiely at Physio 4 U looking after me, and Barry at Kingfisher NUIG has been letting me use their club to build up my weaker left quad.
Sean & Edel at Amphibian King in Oranmore have been helping me out with all the gear that I require, both for training and for the run itself in December.

So, while I am not in anyway discounting the challange that lays ahead, I am more concerned at the moment of getting everything organised on time. Thanks to Stephen at Celtic Campervans, we now have the transport sorted to carry my crew and essentials. I have a number of people who have volunteered to help us out at our 8 locations where we will be holding the mile run/walk. We still need people for Kilkenny & Castlebar.

Most importantly, we need to start encouraging people to sign up to take part. Our target is €100,000, so far we have only 10 people signed up, but loads of people have said that they will do it.

So for the rest of this month, as well as giving you updates on my training, I will be letting you know how you can sign up, exactly where the events will be held, updates on OTRA, and loads of other relevent and some not so relevent bits of info.

Heard Speedy44 on Radio1 at around 8:30 this morning - good PR!
    Good luck with the running.
Is there a day-by-day plan? Could not see it on the website.

If you click the button at the top of the page, "1000 Mile run for home", beside the photo is an Itinerary which opens a spreadsheet.

The run routes are being added as the final route is being decided, often it is just the day before due to traffic management.

Check out the Amphibian King and OTRA Facebook pages for up to date info too.

    Hi All,

We are holding a special event in Kilkenny at 5.30pm next Monday evening at the Watershed.
The Mayor of Kilkenny will be there to help us out, and hopefully we may get 1 or 2 celebs down as well ;)

We would like as many people as possible to turn up to run or walk a mile to help fight homelessness. Don't worry if your not a runner, the pace I was going at this evening, I think a lot of walkers will be passing me
So please come along and bring your friends.

Remember, you can learn more about On The Road Again at www.otra.ie and you can also make a donation. We will have bucket collectors with us on Monday as well.

    Tx

Fantastic mileage from Speedy44. After a difficult second week he's catching up with almost 700 miles run, so just over 300 to do (and will do) in the next week

Tomorrow might not be the easiest day for him psychologically so i just thought I'd send some Christmas cheer on here :)

Finished the 1000mls around 9.45pm on New Year's Eve. Tx to members of Mayo AC, Corofin AC, Athenry AC, Tuam AC & my own club, GCH for running with me over the last 3 days of the event.

Have to say it was the hardest thing I ever undertook. Was relatively ok until I picked up the muscle stain in my left quad on the 9th day. That lasted for 6 days where I was only able to manage as little as 9mls one day. I lost a load of mileage in that time, and all this meant that I had to do 303mls in the last week alone.

I was running 45-46mls a day for the last 6 days, which meant I was running for up to 9 1/2 hrs, and then this was affecting my sleep.

On the 30th in Tuam I was all over the place at the end of the night, and was only able to run 40mls. This meant that I had to forego my origional plan of finishing in Galway at 3.30pm as it would also have meant starting running at 4am to get in the required 45mls!

When I got to Galway there was a great turnout to run into the city with me, unfortunately I still had 19mls to run. I had a really bad pain inmy stomach and didn't know how I was going to run, but once I started I felt fine thankfully.

Never so glad to finish something in my life.

Thanks for all the support on our f/b page, blog & boards along the way.
