Citroen C5 v Renault Laguna

Contrary to common misconceptions about French cars, the C5 is a great reliable motor and not expensive to maintain. The only thing you need to look out for is the condition of the Diesel Particulate Filter which could get blocked if the car has been doing mainly short runs and the Eloy's fluid (which is used to burn off soot deposits trapped in the DPF) may need topping up at around 100,000 miles. The hydro-pneumatic suspension is a god-send for anyone with a sore back and great for getting through flooded roads that leave other cars stranded.

Don't know much about the Laguna.

No contest, even though both cars are the same year the Laguna is a generation newer. It was a 1 year old design in 2008 while that model C5 was a 7 year old design in 2008. The C5 probably has better ride comfort but the Laguna is better in every other area.

If you are going to compare a Laguna III to a C5 it needs to be the new model C5

The mid life facelift really tidied up the styling on the outside of the first gen C5. I never could warm to the interior, the dash in particular.

    Thanks for the input.

With the C5, what would be the deal with the reg plates? Would there be english plates or irish plate on it? would this have an impact on insurance?

That C5 looks like it is still on UK plates. Check with the garage to see if that price includes paying VRT. Even if it does include VRT I think it is expensive for the old model C5. Insurance will not be a problem as the dealer will VRT it on your behalf, he will then give you the new Irish reg number and you insure it as normal.

Here is a cheaper new generation C5 for similar money but it is the basic model and cannot match the spec of the Laguna:

I would class the C5 (new shape) and Laguna on a par, both have no nightmare stories around reliability but the Laguna looses out to the C5 on ride comfort and looks. The C5 would probably be more comfortable but they tend to be a bit more expensive than a similar Laguna. Old C5 is outclassed by the much newer Laguna and from a different era.

BTW, here is a cheaper Laguna than the one you linked to:

Another question; What exactly does the Privilege Laguna offer that the dynamique does not?
