I thought ONLY the Dáil matters when it comes to Finance Acts!

Well, the Dail and the Minister for Finance, but basically yes.

The thing is, this body has no ability to actually intervene in the democratic process. They are there to provide an independent (from the Department of Finance) source of comment and guidance on budgetary and economic matters - I think after the last 5 years most people will realise that this type of body is essential (which is why most other European countries have one). The only issue I have with this body was that it wasn't established about 20 years ago.

The Dail did such a good job of overseeing public finances in the past...

The FAC was created under the terms of our bailout - and it's a good idea, I think. You have a body that can call bull on figures that are glossed over by political spinsters rather than proper financial minds.

We've known for a time that €3.6bn would not be enough to cut in December given the slow growth in the country. And the idea of going to €4.4bn to shorten (but sharpen) the pain is a relevant policy option.

Only the DoF and one or two figures in the cabinet oversee the budget. The Dail is just a rubber stamp with no serious investigation of the budget and no ability to investigate it. Trying to pretend the Dail represents a democratic oversight of the budget is a bad joke.

This crowd brings out its very first report and already our interviewers and Pat Rabitte (surprise to me) are critical of it.

Matt Cooper wanted to know how much the chairman was earning ffs.

    Bring back FF.
