Seems to be alot of people asking me this of late. With less than 3 weeks left now you should have made up your mind what shoes you will be wearing on the marathon day.
besides hitting the wall the next most common thing is people loosing toe nails and getting blisters on their feet due to not getting the right fit.
My rule would be 3 long runs before the big day to make sure you are happy with your shoes but id love to hear other peoples opinions and also anyone who has experienced lost toe nails.

I keep losing my left big toenail even though I've changed shoes and gone up a size, toenails are overrated IMO!

I think that's overly cautious. After 2 x 10 mile runs I know if the shoes will be fine for a marathon or not.

I ran a marathon last weekend in a pair of shoes that were well broken in. I have them about 5 months and did all of my LSRs in them - all blister free and no toenail problems. Didn't save me at the weekend though! Managed to pick up 2 blisters (fairly minor) and 3 bruised looking toenails that I'm a bit worried for. Have lost a toenail from running once before - had always thought it was just a risk from running marathons?

Mismatching numbers of toes and nails are one of the signs of a real runner :D

Can't be too over cautious ;)
Maybe thats why you call yourself a real runner?

Nope. If you apply that particular rule, then I am not a real runner. ;)

There are a few others that I qualify under though, but they all tend to be inadvisable to read during lunch time. :D

Don't the ultra guys (Bruce Fordyce) cut the toes in the Runners to give more room?

Marshall Ulrich is the only one, as far as I know. His main function is to make the rest of us look normal.

Me too. If the shoes fit ok, and you've reasonable socks, then you should be ok with a couple of hours' running. Put on some compeed on toes/heels/risk areas if you're paranoid.

I've bought shoes a couple of weeks before marathons, and not suffered any extra because of it....

I always preferred running a marathon in a pair of shoes with the minimum amount of kms in them. Ideally, I'd buy a pair of shoes in the same make, size and model as I was happy with, and then do about 30 to 50 km in them. Never had any problems.
