Hope the injured member is ok, and that the message is getting out to criminals who decide to ram Garda cars.

Two men have been arrested in Limerick after an incident involving gardaí, and another car, in which gunshots were fired.

It is understood the shots fired during the exchange, were discharged by gardaí.

The Garda Ombudsman Commission has been notified.

Gardaí say they discharged a number of shots after a car failed to stop for them on the Dooradoyle Rd at approx 4.30pm this afternoon.

It is understood the vehicle then rammed one of the patrol cars.

Two garda cars were damaged and an officer who was injured in the incident has been taken to Limerick Regional Hospital for observation.

The two men arrested, one in his late 20s, the other in his late 30s, are being held at Roxboro Rd Garda station under section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act.

The scene has been preserved for technical examination.

The Garda Ombudsman Commission has been notified.

Was the Garda car not rammed following discharge? I think there's more to this story than just a failure to stop. Hope everybody is ok.

Reports that GSOC investigators arrived before the spent casings hit the ground are completely untrue and malicious.....

For the bandwagon vultures, GSOC are notified any time firearms are discharged regardless of circumstances. It is NOT a sign of any wrong-doing or otherwise.

Secondly, fair play for using firearms to effect an arrest of two males intent on causing serious harm to the Gardai in question and harm to the general public by their dangerous driving.

Courts: Continue the stand and lay out sentences deserved if convicted.

Don't know about Ireland, but around here, a car is considered a deadly weapon and if it looks like the other guy is about to threaten your life by hitting you with his car, you are well entitled to shoot in your own defence.

KATHRYN HAYES in Limerick and CONOR LALLY, Crime Correspondent

GARDAÍ OPENED fire on a car in which two convicted sex offenders and two teenage women were travelling in Limerick yesterday after the car rammed an unmarked patrol car.

The shots were discharged in the southside suburb of Dooradoyle after a silver-coloured Peugeot failed to stop for an unmarked patrol car shortly after 4.30pm.

A sex offender in his 20s, with an address in Dublin, was driving the car, and a 27-year-old Limerick criminal was travelling in the passenger seat. Both men have convictions for sex offences. The two women with them are aged 19.

Gardaí pursued the Peugeot down a cul de sac beside Regional United soccer club’s grounds off the Dooradoyle Road. The car was reversed at speed and driven against the Garda car in an attempt to ram it out of the way. The Peugeot was also repeatedly rammed against a second unmarked patrol car, which joined the pursuit.

It is understood four shots were fired by a garda at the tyres of the Peugeot in an attempt to prevent it from driving over two gardaí who had got out of one of the patrol cars. Nobody was injured but one garda was taken to the Mid Western Regional Hospital where he was treated for shock. There were unconfirmed reports he suffered a minor injury to his hand.

The two men were arrested at the scene and taken to Henry Street and Roxboro Garda stations, where they were being held last night under section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act.

The criminal with the Dublin address is a convicted sex offender who is also wanted on robbery charges. The Limerick man is a convicted rapist who served a lengthy prison sentence.
