How do you manage your shows?

Is it just me or are there many more new shows this year for Fall 2011 than years past? I'm keeping up with as many as I can but it's almost a full time job so far! I don't remember it being as hectic the past few years. I guess other years there were shows that you knew after an episode or two that were going to get axed so you stopped watching. However, there are a few looking that way so far but it doesn't seem as obvious.

How are you coping? Do you give up if you don't like the pilot and prepare to be convinced if the show gets a season pickup and catch up down the line or just draw a line at say 6 shows you'll follow and leave it at that?

Christ there really is a lot of television out there :)

I don't bother with new shows until a few episodes have aired. By then I can get an idea of the quality from people here. I, can also get an idea of whether it will succeed or be axed prematurely. I've been burnt too often to invest in a show that has no future.

I don't watch anything that hasn't been renewed any more.

I usually wait for at least 5 or 6 episodes to be aired before i watch.
The exception this year being revenge which i watch week by week.

I think as well tv fans here on Boards are more informed about tv shows, we're covering ALOT more shows then in previous years, you've got Canadian and Aussie and NZ shows, cable shows are on the rise....so you're checking out more stuff then you might have in years gone by.

All thanks to us Boardsies :) As for meself....i this year i am stretching things out more, Monday is my busiest night so i try stretch it out over the full week (incl weekend), i'm not watching shows right away like previous years. Way too much to try fit into a night.

Just wait til there's a few episodes aired. For something that has a lot of hype and has writers or whatever that I like I might watch the pilot to get a feel for it. Generally though I'll leave it til near enough Christmas.

I normally watch the shows within the day they air, I watch a good few of them live by streaming too. Am watching so many shows now that it is so hard to keep up with them all!!

    Current Schedule:

    Monday
    The Amazing Race(Watch live)
    Pan Am
    X Factor Australia
    Tuesday
    X Factor Australia
    Wednesday
    Glee(watch live)
    Thursday
    Survivor(Watch live)
    Modern Family(Watch live)
    X Factor USA
    Friday
    Parks and Rec
    X Factor USA

and that is just the over seas shows :D Have a good few UK/Irish shows that I watch too. The Walking Dead will also be added to that list when it comes back next week!!

I think my system is slightly different to the majority around these parts.
If I like the trailer and buzz surrounding a new show, I'm gonna tune in to the pilot, which means I end up viewing a lot of pilots in September, but if I'm not impressed or see some sort of potential within the first 15 minutes of a pilot, the show is dead to me... You weed out a lot, but not all of, the sh*te this way.

If the pilot has impressed me enough to continue watching, I then give the new show a further 2 episodes to prove itself. If by the end of episode 3 the quality of the show has declined or it just isn't doing it for me, it's bye bye.

To put it into context, this year I tuned in for nearly every single one of the pilots aired so far... New Girl, The Playboy Club, Terra Nova, 2 Broke Girls, Ringer and Suburgatory all made it past the pilot stage. New Girl is the only one so far to make it past episode 3 (Playboy Club would have, but that decision wasn't up to me). Suburgatory still has an episode to prove its worth.

Even though I give everything a fair chance I'm a harsh critic these days and have even used this system I developed for the new shows with the ones I've been following for years. Based on poor seasons last year, I gave some of my favourites an episode or two this year before dropping them this year. Dexter, Supernatural and Shameless UK have bitten the dust (although with the former 2 I've left the possibility of returning to catch up with them in the summer, if feedback is positive re: their current seasons). Same goes for Bones, although I'm not even going to give it a couple of episodes to impress this season - last season only had 1 episode that stands out in my mind and the show was already down at the bottom of my list. I had even returned to Two and a Half Men to see how Kutcher got on and dismissed that after the 3rd episode as well...

How I Met Your Mother, The Big Bang Theory and The Middle were also on my deathlist, but their most recent installments restored my faith (for the meantime anyway)...

So I'm actually watching even less this year than I have been for the past few years, but the quality of what I'm watching is much higher because I'm being so methodical about it.

My current line-up looks as follows (I watch the shows the day after they air, even UK and Irl shows):

    Monday:
    The Amazing Race
The Walking Dead (starts this week, but will be subjected to my 3 episode challenge)

    Tuesday:
    House
    How I Met Your Mother
    The Apprentice (Ireland)

    Wednesday:
    The Biggest Loser US
    New Girl
    Raising Hope
Last Man Standing (well I'm about to give the pilot a spin anyway)

    Thursday:
    Survivor
The X Factor US (yes, I'll admit to watching it)
    Modern Family
    The Middle
Suburgatory (for this week anyway - we'll see after that)

    Friday:
    Community
    The Big Bang Theory
    The X Factor US

    Saturday:
    An Idiot Abroad

    Currently in the off season:
    Doctor Who
    Game of Thrones
    Misfits
    True Blood
    Chuck (final season this year)
The IT Crowd (also apparently will be the final season)
    The Apprentice UK
    Big Brother US

Shows I've started watching that will most likely make my watchlist once I've caught up:
Cougar Town (thank you Community, for convincing me to watch this one)
    Breaking Bad

The only things I'm watching week-to-week now are: Breaking Bad, Community, Spooks

Then for Boardwalk Empire, Terra Nova, Hawaii 5-0, NCIS Los Angeles, Nikita & Homeland I'm kinda letting them build up and I'll probably watch crazy marathons later :D

BUT I've just discovered Friday Night Lights, It's finished now but it ran for 5 seasons. ITS SO GOOD! I'm flying through season 1 :)

A lot of my TV shows are taking a break now. I usually have a TV marathon on a lazy Sunday to catch up on shows that I've missed or couldn't keep up on :) I'm actually struggling to find something to watch right now.

I'm watching as much as I can, but already it's like 4 or 5 shows a day. So far I've dropped Secret Circle(I'll consider returning to it, heard it's getting darker), Up All Night, Whitney & New Girl. Ringer's pretty much hit or miss at this point, and stoooopid NBC canceled Playboy Club :(

My on air/currently airing(must watch) TV off the top of my head

    Lost Girl
    Dexter
    Castle
    Terra Nova
    Sons of Anarchy
    Hart of Dixie
    Prime Suspect
    Revenge
    American Horror Story
    The Vampire Diaries
    Nikita
    Fringe
    Pan Am
    Dexter
    Homeland
    The Good Wife
