Nuts: friends or foes

I started snacking on nuts as a replacement for chocolate/crisps recently, thinking I was doing great because nuts are high in protein.

But some of the girls at work reckon I'll do nothing but put weight on with them.

Are nuts friends or foes to a yoyo dieter?

Pound for pound, nuts are in high in calories. Most of these calories come from the fat in nuts.

However, having said the above, nuts are far, far better for you than chocolate or crisps. I would go as far as to say that the calories you would eat from nuts would not be put onto your body as bodyfat, or at least that you would find it harder to put weight on eating nuts than eating chocolate and crisps.

Have you ever seen anyone that was overweight because they ate nuts? I haven't. However, I've seen plenty of overweight people who eat chocolate and crisps.

Plus, you get countless vitamins, minerals and protein etc. from nuts. You don't get any of that from crisps or chocolate. I know it might be hard to stick to eating nuts when the girls in the office are telling you you shouldn't, but stick with it. Let them eat their crisps and chocolate and tell them to mind their own business if they get a bit pushy.

    Cool, thanks.

Yeah that's what I figure, and as snacks go they are really filling and I'm just not disciplined enough to walk around hungry on a diet. I'll try and eat right but not a hope am I living off rabbit food alone!

    Weight out 25g, that's 150 calories.
Be careful not to eat to many. In general, I would say they aren't a good idea on a diet.
Nuts themselves are fine, but people aren't disciplined enough to only eat a sensible serving.

Nut protein is not high quality and not that useful in itself. It's only really useful if you eat beans/pulses and cereals as well. They are very nutritious in other ways though.

When tallking about eating nuts as a snack, exactly what types are we talking about?

I presume the likes of salted and dry roasted are a complete no-no?

Are pine nuts good or bad? They're the only ones I like! Lovely in salads or stir fry.

Eat the unsalted kind, the salted kind are the road to ruin for most.

I agree with other posters don't go 'nuts' on them.

Asking what they're like in isolation is fairly useless.

If you follow a keto diet, they're great. Try Almonds, Walnuts. Alternatively you can use Peanut Butter (Whole Earth)
If you follow a moderate to high carb diet, avoid them.

Here is an example of how to use them on a keto diet:

    195lb male
    Meal #1: 5 whole eggs.
Meal #2: 8oz chicken breast and 1/3 cup almonds.
Meal #3: 50g whey protein isolate with 1.5 tablespoon natural peanut butter.
Meal #4: 8oz fish with 1/3 cup almonds.
Meal #5: 55g whey protein isolate with 1.5 tablespoon natural peanut butter (post workout).
Meal #6: same as meal #1.

Was thinking this very question last week! Would pistachio nuts be a good or bad type to be snacking on?

I don't know anyone who can eat a small quantity of pistachio nuts tbh!:D

Yea, they're fine once you've account for the calories in your diet, but you'd want to be going for natural/unsalted variety if you plan to eat them on a regular basis.
