Training Contingency

I have a bit of time before I start my next Tri training cycle and I was wondering if its a good idea to start a week or two earlier and 'bank' that training as a contingency?

With family holiday periods at year end and other possible interuptions later in the training cycle would it be wise to build in a bit of slack in the schedule to allow for these inevitable hicups or am I better off sticking to the plan as much as possible and just working around any interuptions? I'd anticipate leaving the last phase of the cycle on schedule but maybe having 2 weeks of float for the early phases.

Last year I was starting into a 30 week plan and I decided to begin two weeks early. I dont think it made any difference in terms of how well prepared I was, but when I was sick at christmas and had to sit out for a full week it was nice to know I wasn't after "falling too far behind", which made it easier to take the proper time to ease back into training.

Hey Red, the DF plan is not gospel and I see no harm in starting it early. The base phase of it is handy enough up to week 10 anyway so you will have some flexibility in there. You could always just do 2 weeks of training as you feel. Lose the watch, HRM etc.. and just do whatever you feel like doing.

Consider your recovery stategy too if you are starting early. Also, the DF plan is 30 weeks. Austria is about 35 weeks away from the start of November so you are actually 7 weeks early to start the plan..
