Health & Safety nuts

Just read a story about a school in the UK that is replacing footballs with foam balls so the students can't get hurt by the 'dangerous' footballs.

And my friends son goes to a primary school where all physical contact is forbidden (even bumping into another student can result in a warning).

What's next? Looking at someone classed as 'bullying'?
People who make these rules should be kept away from children. Their stupidity might be infectious.

Here's the story about this latest round of madness.
    http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-gloucestershire-15023580

And for iPhone users who apparently don't have decent browsers:
A junior school in Gloucester has banned leather footballs from being used in the playground because of health and safety concerns.

Harewood Junior School in Tuffley, attended by seven to 11 year-olds, banned the leather balls following a "number of accidents" last year.

In the weekly newsletter, head teacher Andrea Mills said only sponge or soft balls would be used in the playground.

The school declined to comment further on the decision.
    'Unbelievable'

In the newsletter, Mrs Mills said the decision was made following a number of incidents last year and pupils and staff had agreed on the decision.

Mrs Mills said: "We will still be using the correct size leather balls for football club and specific PE lessons."

The move has been criticised by a charity.

Tam Fry, chairman of the Child Growth Foundation, said: "This kind of decision suits only the die hards of health and safety.

"George Best and all the football stars wouldn't have got where they are if they were kicking sponge around, they kicked footballs in the backyard and if they fell over and scarred themselves it was part of the learning curve.

"No one wants a child to be damaged by having a football kicked at them, but it's just unbelievable that we should be preventing our children learning things."

Gloucestershire County Council said: "It is up to individual schools to make decisions like this. Gloucestershire County Council has not advised them to do this."

Health and safety is getting ridiculous but you can't blame employers/schools etc. How may times are those "No win No fee" lawyers advertising on telly to put in a claim for everything? It's easier for people to ban activities than to pay ridiculous amounts on money in lawyer fees.

In my old primary school they put up foam insulation stuff on the basketball nets because someone ran into one and sprained his arm.

Seems like the next logical step is to coat all children in the same foamy stuff. Or put them in little plastic balls.

When I graduate next summer I won't be able to throw my hat in the year because it poses a health and safety risk. I'll be allowed to wear the hat for my graduation photo but that will be it. If my degree was in Kaiser Wilhelm impersonation I could understand maybe not throwing my hat up in the air but to not be able to throw my university hat in the air is ridiculous.

Thing is (in the UK at any rate) it tends to be those of the Tory persuasion who complain the loudest about "elf and safety"

Guess which party was in Government when it became legal for lawyers to advertise their services

Probably for the same reason Macdonalds put 'HOT' on their coffee cups.

    Don't blame the teachers OP

Blame the parents who say ca-ching if their little precious gets hurt.

A school has to protect themselves

Ha gone be the days we used to climb walls trees jump off them from a height. Lads stabbing each other with sharp pencils compasses. Sliding around outside in bad weather on the icy paths

Yeah, that's the main reason for it - it's not some conspiracy to make life difficult, but dammit, let people enjoy bitching and moaning about it! :pac:

I blame the governments that allow it.
