No PE hall.... help & ideas!!!!

    hi,

I am a PE teacher and have just found out that I will be without a hall for a few months this winter due to building works going on. Question is really, if I have no hall, no large space and only small classrooms to teach PE in... what can I do with the space I have when the weather is bad outside? I am used to using very small areas but just not as small as classroom and I fear that the children will not benefit from the classes as much as they could!

Is it okay to give the students a number of theory lessons based on physical fitness, bones, muscles etc or what is peoples' experiences of such a situation?

    Any help would be appreciated!!!

Bizzy Break is available from the Irish Heart Foundation - it's a 10 minute series of physical activities that are designed for use in a classroom. It wouldn't replace a full P.E. lesson, but it might give you some ideas you can build on for older kids.

Health related fitness would be a good one to look at - do the practical stuff outside when it is dry and the theory behind it in the classroom. As for your question is it okay to give them theory classes - of course it is! Best thing is to maybe link with the classes science teacher and see have they covered the human biology part of the course.

Another thing is speed stacking - link http://speedstacks.ie - it would be ideal for the students in a classroom environment where they cannot move around. It links in with hand eye co-ordination and speed, has a number of developments from easy stacking to more difficult stacking. We did it within a classroom environment with about 20 of us in there, and you can do a lot with it - a lot of ideas within the pack afaik and the guy who has the Irish licence would probably come out and give you a tutorial.

This sounds really awful conditions. i am not a pe teacher but I did teach PE part time for a year a long time ago, where there was no hall.

Try exercises, stretching, step aerobics, yoga, tai chi, relaxation exercises ) tensing and releasing muscles), Arm wrestling competitions, french skipping with the elastic bands, indoor skipping - even taking turns one by one inside loop and if youre really desperate to liven things up - tug o war.
