    Hi all,

I'm thinking of changing my car. I currently drive a 1.4 petrol opel astra, 6 years old. I drive approx 800 km a week for work so it's costing me a fortune on fuel and maintenance.

My challenge for you all :-) is to suggest a new car for me please. Diesel I guess is a must, 4/5 door, new or nearly (09/10) new, budget of around 16/18K and I'm open to all suggestions.

    Thanks in advance...

How long is a piece of rope:) With your kind of mileage id be going for a saloon car diesel. Im a vw man so id recommend a passat. You couldnt go to wrong with a toyota avensis diesel either. If going for a diesel try get one with small mileage.

As for maintenance costs well you will still end up with that problem...

No. Your man that said that obviously has a problem with price lists.Id love to pay a visit to the dealer whos flogging these sciroccos for less than a golf.

    That's what I thought... Scirocco's a fine car.

If cost is your concern why not spend about €4000 on a diesel that will do 50ish mpg?

Spending €18K to cut down on fuel and maintenance costs makes no sense really.

Fair enough if you want to spend that sort of money.

You did say you were open to all suggestions :P

Definitely saw it somewhere, but I've a memory like a goldfish tbh, so it's likely i'll never actually remember where it was. I know for sure I didn't make it up though!

I wouldn't be a fan of the cee'd but the pro ceed is a lovely looking car imo

I myself really like the i30. I hired the hatch in 2009, sport model and I absolutely loved it. Very comfortable, lovely interior, excellent sound system and it looks well.

On the way home I found I had put too much diesel into the tank before setting off (dealer doesn't refund that money) and I was doing everything to use juice. I put on the A/C, drove hard enough, had 4 others in the car but the needle wouldn't drop!

I had put €30 worth of diesel in before setting off from Thurles to Cork and when I got back the following day there was at least €15 worth left in the tank.

I hired the SW then last year and it was the same experience except with the extra length.

Both were 1.6 CRDi and I would highly recommend them. If it was my money, I'd go for the i30 over the Cee'd/Pro_ceed every time.

(I am not in any way affiliated with Hyundai or the garage from which I rented).

I know for sure I didn't make it up though!

    At the moment, a 2.0 TDi 140 6Sp Scirocco is €29,595 vs a €28,235 Golf.

Golf for that price is Highline, with plenty of extras, versus white Scirocco. You could definitly pick cheaper golf, with smaller diesel engine. Also, Scirocco isn't exactly what OP is looking for, nice car tough.
