Taxing of Professional fees - how to claim back

    Hi All,

Just wondering if anyone's employers taxed them on their ACA/ACCA fees?

I work as an accountant in industry and they still maintained it was not ABSOLUTELY necessary for me to be a qualified accountant and therefore I was taxed on my fees. Even the Financial Controller was taxed on hers:eek:!

I am wondering if I am entitled to claim the tax back on the fees? Also, how would I go about doing this?

    Thanks!

Have you read the e-brief issued by Revenue?

    http://www.revenue.ie/en/practitioner/ebrief/2011/no-192011.html

Presumably your employer has paid the fees in the first place, and then charged you to tax etc on the benefit in kind? That's in paragraph 3 of the e-brief.

It seems to me that if your employer has taken that view then you have no prospect of making a claim from Revenue. How can you argue with Revenue that you need this qualification when your employer has said you don't?

You have a pretty wretched employer, I'm sorry to say.
