This the NTMA interview? He was very good alright. Well worth a watch.

Reveals a lot about why we can't get things changed no matter who we elect TBH.

Very interesting link - Sommers account confirms the existence of a permament, unelected, unaccountable government of the civil service. We can elect who we like, the civil service will march on regardless.

We will never, ever solve the issues in Ireland without root and branch reform of how policy is conceived and pursued in Ireland. Richard Tol over on irisheconomy.ie has highlighted the case of a Pat Swords who has had to take the government to court to get access to one, simple, little thing: the cost-benefit analysis that policymakers performed and which underpins the public investment in wind power in Ireland.

This has been refused, hence the court battle. The most innocent explanation is that a cost-benefit analysis simply was never performed and the policy was pursued without any real examination or interest in achieving any target or goal or any way of understanding how to achieve that goal. The less innocent explanation is that a cost-benefit analysis was performed and it was found that the policy pursued was poor or inefficient, so its buried.

Its worth noting the government is spending taxpayer money to prevent taxpayers from having any access to the decision making process around how taxpayer money is spent. The civil service loathe any oversight or transparency, and until this is defeated we will simply return to economic failure and fiscal ineptitude again and again and again.
