Would any of you know why my emails are getting bounced back as undeliverable (to a family member)? The notice reads in part "Your message has been enqueued and undeliverable for 2 days
to the following recipients [snipped] Temporary error returned by SMTP partner.
smtp;451 4.7.7 Excessive userid unknowns from [followed by various numbers] The mail system will continue to try to deliver your message
    for an additional 2 days."
    Where might be the problem?

The server may have a problem with what address you are sending from... Have you tried sending to that email address from another email address... ?

Also make sure that the email is not too large, and that you have the (recipient's) email address 100% right..

Their account may be full (esp if you're sending a big message with attachments, as Jonathan suggested above), or the size could have pushed the account over the limit if it were accepted. This happened to me once when some solicitors tried to send me a 7MB PDF.

The recipient's inbox may be full, true. My messages are very short tests. It doesn't matter if I hit "reply" or type the address out. We used to have regular correspondence between the two computers, and the servers haven't changed so far as I know. I had hoped that the clue might be in the message written in the "return to sender" blurb...

Wilcox, the reason IS on the message.

The remote server is rejecting all emails coming from your (i.e. your ISP) mail server, whose IP address is what is shown as those numbers you mentioned.
The mails are being rejected because the recipients mail server has previously received lots of mails from your mail server sent to invalid recipients. This is a sign of a mail server sending spam.

Given the information that you posted, it girdle sound like there is anything that you can do about this for the moment.

It goes sound like a temporary problem though, the mail may still go through after a certain period of time.
It may also become a permanent delivery error, at which point you'll get another message saying this, and your mail will not be delivered.

    Brian

That is interesting, especially as my email address is with eircom, and my "broadband" connection is with O2 (which is the ISP - O2?), both seemingly respectable companies. The recipient is with sbcglobal. My emails haven't gotten through at all for months. I wonder if it would do any good to raise the issue with O2 and/or eircom?
