Fines for stupid things you ever got...???

Inspired by other thread about fine for wrongly placed tax disc, I thought I'll share with you about some stupid fines I got during my driving career.

Here's some of them, all from Poland, as since I moved to Ireland I never got any fine for anything here. Currency "zl" is Polish currency. At that times 100zl would be even harder to earn than €100 now in Ireland, so fines were big enough.

2001 - fine of 100zl for not having my fire extinguisher out of validity cert (cars has to be equipped with fire extinguisher, and it has to be certified once a year). As I had slightly modified car, they stopped me for road check, and checked everything they could to find something to fine me. Eventually they did - extinguisher.

2001 - fine of 100zl and 2 penalty points for driving with fog light during the day while no fog. It was maybe a week after I got a new car, and I just checked if fog's worked on the parking, forgot to turn them off, and drove away.

2002 - fine of 100zl for taking a turn on a junction with a skid (it was nice snowy evening, so hand brake came into operation).

2003 - fine of 50zl for driving against the flow of traffic on one way street. In reality it was one way street through the estate, and instead of driving 2km around to get there, I just reversed into it, and parked straight away. Policeman told me it's not an offence to reverse on one way street, especially it was in the middle of night with no traffic, but it is an offence to cross "no entry" sign, no matter if forward or backwards.

2005 - fine of 200zl and 4 penalty points for driving without dipped headlights on. I had my side light on while I was waiting for some, and then forgot to switch to dipped headlights before I started driving. It was in the middle of the day.

2006 - fine of 250zl and 5 penalty points for not adhering to "right turn only" sign. It was actually middle of the night, no traffic at all, no cars within my view. There is a sign forcing to turn right, to avoid congestions during the day. Considering I didn't see any car withing a mile, I decide I will go straight left. Unfortunately police patrol was probably a mile away, and they've seen it.

2007 - fine of 250zl and 5 points for not adhering to road markings. I was entering the main road from parking, and had to turn left straight away. As there was tremendous traffic, I couldn't get into the correct lane, so I turned from other lane. They fined me, but they mistakenly put the wrong sign number on the penalty notice. Eventually I had a fine for not adhering to this sign:
    150px-Znak_C-11.svg.png

How can you not adhere to this sign????

Of course I received plenty more fines, but this were for things, I wouldn't expect to be fined for...

Did you guys got any fines, for something small or funny, that you wouldn't expect to be fined?

I was once unjustly given a fine for going through a red light which i didn't do, and shouted at for "trying to race" another car (which i also wasn't doing, i was driving an old van, slowly).

This was all because another I had once argued with the same guy about the fact that he'd tried to do me for being parked in a "yellow box" when i'd only had to move into it (ended up with the back bumper and part of the two back wheels in the box) to allow a fire engine to get out of a small lane where it didn't have enough space to turn and many other people wouldn't move for him. That time i parked my car as soon as I could and went to the garda station and complained about it, as a result of that he was told not to do anything about it. But then one day he decided to do what i outlined above, and actually lied/made it up, but was believed more easily than me as he was a gard.

I just remembered to add that on another occasion i was shouted at for 20 minutes and called a "f*cking liar" and "cheeky little pr*ck" (that one was funny as i'm polite, well spoken and not in any way uncivil or antisocial when dealing with gardai, and also 6ft 2 and 21 stone so not little at all and this gard was about 5-5 or 5-6 at the most, case of small man syndrome there i think), because he was convinced that i'd made a pickup truck myself. I was driving a rare, old pickup that he'd never seen before so he decided that i'd obviously built it myself and was lying to him about what it was. It did exist as a model though and everythign was in order so he could do nothing only shout after me to "stop driving old heaps of sh*t and get a regular car"

I've an ongoing situation with a town council over a parking fine.

I had parked a van opposite our office while I was bringing across supplies. It was in a zone marked as disc parking. There was a loading bay a few meters up the street but it was occupied by private cars.

Of course I got fined €40 for not having a parking disc and was refused under appeal. I don't care, I'll let it go to court and argue my case. If the traffic warden was operating properly he should have been fining the cars in the loading bay.

I can see where your coming from but you have 7 examples and in 6 of them you deserved to get a fine. Sorry mate!

24 points is maximum, and they are erased a year after offence.

But it's still easy enough to go over.
For speeding you can get up to 10 points.
For incorrect overtaking - up to 10 points.
For causing a collision (even a small fender-bender) - up to 10 points.

    Hmm.
Actually i thought it was 7 examples, not 6, where fine was deserved.
Which one in your opinion wasn't?

My point was not that I got those fines unfairly.
My point was that these were fines for little stupid things.
Was just curious, if people get as much of those as well in Ireland.

I don't think this deserves a fine tbh, the other offences I would consider serious rather than silly.

Of course it does, as driving with dipped headlight on is obligatory there at all times.

I still consider most of them silly.
It doesn't change a thing anyway, they are still offences.

    What an ignorant wanker!!!

Back in March I got pulled over at a speed checkpoint on the Clare - Limerick dual carriageway just before the turn off for Limerick City and a Guard tried to convince me that it was a 60km/h zone and that I was speeding. The area where I was pulled was 100km/h and I was clocked at 97km/h . I paid a visit to Mayorstone Garda station confirmed that I was right and he was wrong. The Guards in the station couldnt figure out where your man got the 60km/h idea from.

Not long after the points system started I was driving up to a Garda checkpoint when I had a massive headstagger and unbuckled my belt.

    Australia 2009 - Quiet side street -

"Offence: 8405 - Not parallel park in direction of traffic"

$135!!!!!!!! Wanted to park in the back of the appartment but the girlfriend was worried about upsetting the regular parkeres ...no reserved spaces..

I spotted a space on the other side of the road and woke up to find a fairly hefty fine on the windscreen..I did pay it as I was living there

    That's your opinion.
To be honest with you, in my opinion, this particular one was probably the most dangerous, comparing to others.
When all cars are lit, one unlit really causes a danger.

Wish it was the same in Ireland, the amount of people I meet at night with no lights on, you think they'd cop the lights aren't on on the dash.

Driving the wrong way down a one way street, not adhering to road markings and not adhering to a right turn only are significantly more serious offences regardless of what your opinion is mate!

Agree'd but certain months of the year we need to make it compulsary to use dipped lights..

It'll never happen I know a heap of learner permit drivers driving around as if they've a full licence....only in Ireland

Who decides about seriousness of offences?

Hence, most of what you said here, were done in the middle of the night, with no other traffic around.
That makes those offences not dangerous in my opinion.

    .

Common sense decides it my friend, I hope I don't meet you on the road at night if darkness is your excuse. Also when you didn't have your lights on you were not trying to commit an offence on purpose. The other offences you comitted the offence on purpose. If there was nobody around, how did you get caught!

I suppose common sense differs between people ;)

Not darkness, but lack of anyone around within big radius.
Also when you didn't have your lights on you were not trying to commit an offence on purpose. The other offences you comitted the offence on purpose. If there was nobody around, how did you get caught!

When turning left on "right turn only" there must have been a patrol car traveling the other road about a mile away. They obviously somehow seen it. Maybe they had binoculars. It took them another 2km before they actually caught me.

Reversing into one way street was reported by a neighbour.
I was visiting some friends, and as it's the last house on the end of long one way street, almost everyone goes there like that to save few km driving. Unfortunately some neighbour bought a video camera, and starter recording those things through his window and sending videos to the police.

As I said before. Those offences were commited - i'm not arguing about it, and i'm not complaining i got fined for them.
I just wrote about those, as there was absolutely no danger or inconvienience for anyone by committing them.

When you do something completely irrational, like putting your socks in the frying pan and the bacon in the tumble dryer, thats a headstagger :).

Anyways, mine cost me a fine and two points.
