    Hey,

I want to import a product into ireland. I am wondering if a consumer is hurt by the product who is liable to be sued. Is it me, or the producer I bought it from!

    Cheers!!

Where are you importing it from?

You would probably be the first target as you are here - easier to sue someone in the same country than abroad.

If somebody were to sue under the Products Liability Directive then you would be the ultimate target since you are importing from outside the EEA. Initally they would sue everybody, including those that you sell on to, however, once the distributor gives your name to the ultimate consumer then you would be the target.

This is all from sketchy memory and you should definately be advised by a solicitor on this and related matters if you are considering importing products. There are probably a whole host of other issues that you may not have even thought of.

Don't forget OP if its not already in the country it might be because it needs relatively expensive testing, certification or localisation before it can be sold here. CE testing for example. I say relatively expensive as the actual costs might not be that high but might be a major cost of the whole project compared to the number of items that might be sold here.
