Basically a number of Linux satellite boxes, eg dreambox, vu+duo, et9000 etc. depending on the image used has drivers for usb tv dtt tuners.
So you insert a usb stick tv tuner (eg Hauppage Nova, Sony playtv) in the back of the satellite box, plug in your aerial and watch saorview.

    Yup thats it..

Get a usb dvb-t tuner with a chipset known thats working..

I'm using Dream Elite Black hole, download the correct driver..

    Configure it

Scan for channels on the right frequency and hey presto you got a dvb-t and dvb-s twin tuner ;)

Is there any firmware / software for the DM800HD which would allow it to operate as a DLNA Media Server or give access to channels in a similar way to a Slingbox ?

Thanks for the replies chaps. I have a dm800hd with sat tuner so with the right image and driver the usb stick can be added to view dvbt. Im using Nabilo Black Hole 0.11. Will this do? However I have given up trying to get the pvr working this image.

    Thanks.

Would I be right in thinking, that to ape any popular 7 day EPG for satelite tv, these boxes would have to be hooked up to the interwebz all the time? :P

For the saorview epg its transmitted via dvb-t so no you don't need the web..

Satellite epg you need to download from a rytec epg server or similar yes!

No, the DVB-T EPG is transmitted over the air. Similarly, you can pickup either the Freesat using the Vix firmware or the Sky EPG using plugins OTA (e.g. CrossEPG) without recourse to the internet.

Is there Vix Firmware for the Dreambox ?

To watch both DVB-T and DVB-S, is there any reason to stay clear of Dreambox clones ? Intending getting one and using it to access over home Lan (like a Slingbox).

    Have a dm800hd..

    There is no VIX image..

But the best for usb tuners would be Dream Elite Blackhole Phonix..

PM me if you want the link!

Very easy set up like that :)

Regarding streaming and DVB-T, can any number of people watch different channels simultaneously ?

I have an Open Box S9, which I think is Linux. Is there any way I can add a DTT tuner?

No you can't as its closed source linux..

Only the channel that's being viewed on the reciever as far as im aware!

If a dongle is plugged into a PC then yes.
The PC can multicast all channels on the LAN.
You would need one tuner for each mux .... which means two dongles or a dual tuner dongle for the Irish channels.

I don't know that there are any STBs which multicast ... even though it would not be difficult for any manufacturer to include it.

Even to just tune into the single mux would be great. I have a Technaxx S4 USB Stick Tuner. Can you point in in the direction of anywhere it will show me how to multicast from a PC please ?

The guide John mac pointed to should get you going.

I use Linux and USB dongles and have two multicast setups ... one based on that link using
    dvblast & sapserver
and the second is one I have not tested for very long using
    mumudvb

The most important thing is to have a router capable of dealing with the multicast streams.
As all - or a selected number - of streams will be sent from the streaming PC to the router, as multicast, the router must be capable of stopping them there until another PC on the network requests access to play one of the streams.
This prevents the whole LAN from being overloaded with unneeded streaming data.

The results are good IMO and interesting ..... all PCs will have access to all streams at the same time.
Each PC can display all streams at the same time.

So theoretically, if you had a good LAN setup and good PCs receiving the streams, then all channels streamed could be displayed on all PCs at the same time. :D Not practical due to the limitations of LAN and PCs :D

BTW ..... the PC used for streaming can be underpowered for most jobs as the streaming of the mux takes little resources.

    Have fun! :D

Maybe read this one too ....

    http://angrytechnician.wordpress.com/2010/07/23/how-to-stream-every-channel-from-freeview-onto-your-network/

    EDIT:
This is another app that I came across, have downloaded, but haven't used .... maybe someone else has ....

    There's always the Elgato EyeTV.
Plug it into your ariel and network. Stream from PCs. Easy.

    http://www.elgato.com/elgato/int/mainmenu/products/tuner/netstreamdtt/product1.en.html

The MumuDVB Project guys are working on a port of the software to the EyeTV so it can multicast an entire Mux per tuner. So that dual-tuner EyeTV should be enough for both Muxes.

Do you have one of these?
It seems rather limited in what it does - presently - apparently sends two unicast streams on the LAN, one from each tuner.
Also it seems to need internet access to get a programme guide ..... is this correct?

Is there anything from Elgato themselves about doing multicasting?
I did read where MumuDVB have ported the app to the Arm processor which is apparently used in the device. I saw no commitment from Elgato to implement multicasting though.
Is there a link to such?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 194 ✭✭daffy_duc

I don't have one, but I have been following MumuDVB closely over the last few months.
No official support for Multicast from Elgato.
The MumuDVB support is still rather hacky, so its worth holding off for now. (Unless you're into that sort of thing, like I am :) )

Thanks for the extra info ..... explains why I couldn't find anything about multicast support on the device when I searched.

Well I do like to get into such things for fun ..... but think, as I have lots of older PC hardware, that I will keep my costs down by sticking with PCs.
Nevertheless I find it very interesting to read about such as the device mentioned.

Some time ago it occurred to me that it would not take much to build a STB with multicasting to the LAN included.

Tuners are cheap; multicasting costs little in the way of resources (no decoding); and most of all it would be FUN! :D

Maybe some enterprising Open Source Hardware gurus will come up with something.
It would be fun to build such a box :)

Things looking very interesting indeed. I have a Dell Small Form Factor Optiplex 745 and it's under my TV and I use it to watch "sports" via the internet on the TV, all my TV connections come in at this point so it makes sense to run everything from here - but the fan under the Hard Disk can be a bit too noisy if running 24 x 7.

So might just be worth investing in a Solid State Disk or booting off a large USB Stick and dumping the Sata HDD.

So overall, I'm thinking I could maybe create a PC based box to rival a Dreambox !!!

    Have a look at a dm800hd or a vu from satboxes.com mate..

Add an internal hard drive or usb hard drive to them..

And here is pics of "cross epg" which i use:
