Media Center backup

Hi all, not sure if this is the right place to post but I'm looking for advice on backups. I have a media center PC with roughly 17tb (8x 2tb drives and 2x 1.5tb) worth of music, movies and tv shows etc and I'm looking for the safest way to back this up. I'm currently backing up the drives to 2tb 3.5" drives, is this safe enough or will the drives get damaged or degrade even if they're not plugged in and will they work if not used for long periods of time.
Are 3tb hard drives reliable? I've been told they're not great but this would save on buying so many 2tb drives. I've also looked into bluray storage but would cost a lot more than buying hard drives.

    thanks in advance
