Would like to see "Ireland's Call" ditched

I know some will say don't be silly or whatever. But I cringe when I hear that anthem and i'd imagine most of the players do too. And this could have some effect too on Ireland. It's cringy and awful and I guess the only reason the players sing it is because they feel they have to. I am convinced it does us no favours in the passion department which is what the anthems are suppose to do:(

Of all the things to be worried about right now this would rank very low down on the list.

Have to admit, I really don't mind it. Think we should work on our game instead of the song we sing before hand.

Did Ireland lose because of those Northern Unionists?

All I am saying is Wales have a rousing national anthem that their support and players love to sing whereas ours is simply embarrassing. I don't think it helps.

We've had the song for 16 years now. It has become part of Irish rugby. We've won some great games after singing that song. Losing today has nothing to do with an anthem. Nothing.

As an aside, I love the song. It brings back fond memories of when I was a kid, standing in the south terrace at Lansdowne Road. They were some dark days rugby wise, but bloody hell the atmosphere was great back then, and the sport didnt have idiotic football type supporters, and Leinster and Munster fans would get behind each other back then.

    I'm sounding old now.

Unless you want to sing no anthem at all then I don't know what can be done.

We have a National Anthem. That is what we should sing. If we must have Ireland's Call then we should have both for away matches.

You are the first person I have ever seen or heard say they love that song. Really.

It's a team for the Island of Ireland, not the nation of Ireland. Respect should be shown for the Ulster players who might come from a different background. I'm happy with the way things are tbh. I thought rugby was above all that crap.

The song has been there since I started following rugby as a 9 year old in 1995. It is ingrained in my head as being part of Irish rugby. I'd hate to see it go and wouldnt be able to embrace a new song.

If I was 10 years older then perhaps I'd think differently, but I was too young to remember what it was like before Irelands Call and whether it was better or not.

What's the problem with having the two anthems away from home when we have the two at home? That's what I don't understand.

Italy have a stirring anthem. NZ have an anthem in two languages AND a Haka and haven't won the RWC since 1987. Before 1995, Ireland's win/loss ratio was around 20-something percent. Since then it has almost doubled.

Clutching at straws. If you think that team had no 'passion' or gusto, you'd be very mistaken. In 2007, some people blamed the shirts!

Why do the Irish tend to be such bad losers? Its embarrassing.

I've met a lot of Kiwi's and SA's on my travels that love it also.

I could be wrong, but I thought the only reason our national anthem is played in home matches is because the game is in Dublin.

It has been said before, this is not a republic of ireland team. Both cultures must be represented.

You're right actually, the people in this team have their own anthems. We should sing Amhrán na bhFiann and God Save The Queen before each game, the anthems of both countries represented in the team.

Or else we could just sing the song that was written to prevent the shenanigans that causes.

You haven't asked many people. Maybe you haven't been following the game very long. There seems to be a correlation between that and having a problem with Ireland's Call.

Well , we fly the tricolour and the red hand equally, so I'd have no problem with the amhran and god save the queen played together too.
I presume thats what the op meant right :D

If the players need an old sing song before the match to get their heads in the game then we have serious problems. Personally I don't like the song as I think Phil Coulter really should have went for something a bit more rousing and maybe no words - something the entire stadium can hum to.

Then play both the National Anthem and Ireland's Call away from home. Simple. I wonder is "Ireland's Call" really the choice of Northern Unionists for their sensibilities in the first place. I doubt it.

So when we play England we have to listen to it twice?

It's absolutely shocking Joe. I don't know why we can't just sing our national anthem. Ireland's call did nothing to help galvanise our team this morning Joe. It needs to be scrapped. How can we expect to win anything when we have such a god-awful song holding our players back Joe.

    read the charter. op banned.

anthem discussion always turns into some sectarian jingoistic flamefest eventually.
