How is it possible that everyone could have a double?

Apparently everyone in this universe has a counterpart in the other universe. I don't understand how this is possible. It would mean that every couple that ever had a child would have had to have met and conceived a child at the same time in both universes.

In episode two of series four
there was a serial killer in the other universe who wasn't a serial killer in this universe. This would mean that people in that universe died but they wouldn't have died in this universe. If those people went on to have children in this universe that could conceivably mean that generations of people will exist in this universe that won't exist in the other.

There are other circumstances, for instance people dying in accidents or developing diseases in one universe but going on to have children in the other, that would make it seem unlikely that everyone could have a counterpart.

I hope that made sense. I'm just asking for theories by the way, not spoilers.

Simple: there are an infinite number of universes where every single possible different outcome that could possibly happen (and some that couldn't in our universe) will and have happened. The red universe in Fringe just so happens to be very, very similar to the blue universe and presumably yellow universe when they introduce it will be quite similar as well.
The writers are simply choosing to ignore the other universes where, for example, Germany wins WWII or where human evolution does not occur.

I think one way they are, in essence, tricking the system as well is with the observers - the writers have been using them as an answer to questions such as this. That is, the observers are ensuring that x meets y and has a baby named z, or that Peter does die (remember it was the rogue observer that saved him, Peter was supposed to die).

if you ever saw Sliders it would do a better job undertsanding this,

it could be 2000 years ago in another universe julius cesar didnt take power in rome, and therfore the roman empire never fell and we might not have had a dark age and are now exploring space in some fairly distant alternate universe from our own,

i think we should start a thread on possible alternative universes :D

I think its more a case of across the universes there are major players like Walter, Peter and Olivia that exist in all universes or nearly all due to the huge affects they have on events

They have mentioned that the red universe is particularly "close" to the blue universe, which may imply that they're very similar in lots of ways.

Also Charlie doesn't have a double in the blue universe (any more :)). Though we haven't seen him at all this season, maybe in this timeline he dies when Olivia escaped instead of Broyles ?

Didn't they mention there was no William Bell double in the alt universe? so not everyone has a double!
