It depends on the size of your room, and how much room treatment you have. In a small room a sub will make existing bass problems much worse, especially if it's not positioned correctly.

What speakers do you have currently?

Atm i have m audio av30s their only tiny little ones. The room is about 6 meters by 4 meters and about 2 and a half meters high

Going purely on the dimensions (so ignoring what the room is made of) you've a big build up of modes from 57Hz to 71Hz ish, so I think a sub would be awful until you get bass traps in there. You can check the calculations here:

I take it you've no room treatment? Don't waste money on speakers til you've spent a bit on treatment.

I have some acoustic foam over one side but i will be building a wall to split the room pretty soon so the part where the speakers are in will only be about 2 meters by 4 same height with a glass window in it.

Jayzus, the last thing you should do is make the room smaller! The bass will get even worse. Foam will do nothing whatsoever to help your room. All the problems are at about 350Hz and below. The window makes an excellent reflector, so you'll get even less direct sound from the speakers. Also very bad.

Might be moving the control surfaces up into the house and having that room as just a live room.

Another possible problem with a Subs is that it makes it a 3 way system i.e. 2 crossover points (1 for the sub and one for the tweeter) another area of trouble unless very well designed.

Very true, subs are often a gimmick rather than a solution. Certainly at this end of the budget anyway.

BTW walls, small point- the room with control surfaces and speakers is supposed to be called the "control room", the room for the musos to perform is called the "studio". Pedantic Paddy. :)
