Thoughts on layering your cymbals?

    Hey guys and Gals,

I've been layering my drums for a while now (Snare and Kicks) and I'm kinda' getting the hang of it, but I've still a long way to go.

But do you guys generally layer your cymbals up too? I've heard conflicting reports about this. With a lot of people saying not too because there' too much of a frequency clash? Any thoughts on this?

    Thanks, :)

    R.

personally I wouldnt.. why would you want to do that anyway?

Cheers 4 the reply...Well, I've seen one or two tutorials that indicate that they've layered their cymbals (usually 2 max) and altered the frequencies so they sit well together - Much like you'd do with a snare.

But as I said, there's a lot of other info saying not to. So I'm just on here looking for some fresh opinions.

Obviously, were not talking about a realistic cymbal sound here, if it's going to be layered up, but more something that is engineered to sound 'fatter' so to speak.

    Cheers,

    Rob.

personally..i always try stick to keeping it within what's actually possible... for example a real drummer layering cymbals live

2 would be max at any given moment.. so i'd be careful of going beyond that

For Tech Rides - Layer the same sample an octave down.. thicken it up. Roll off some of the lows.

Do it all the time. Anything goes.

    Must try this one.

Sometimes i have a ride hitting on every second note with the reverb up and a phaser on, sometime i duplicate that sound and have them both panned left and right with the phaser on the opposite side having a slightly different modulation time.

    Cool Lads..

Another is have your Ride on the off beat.. Stick a reverb with a 3sec or so tail on it, plate-y type.. and have it 30%ish wet. Sidechain pulls the reverb tail out. Sounds good.

    :)
