Your Running Bucket list

Don't know if this has been done before but here goes....

A few years ago when I started back training (~2002) I had a few times in my head that I wanted to run for certain race distances. At that time they looked something like

    5k: sub 16 minutes
    4miles: sub 24 minutes
    5 miles: sub 30 minutes
    10 miles: sub 60 minutes
    half mara: sub 80 minutes
    marathon: sub 3hrs

Obviously some of these were easier to attain than others. Once I had reached most of these I came up with my "bucket list" of running times. Basically times I'd love to run before I hung up my racing flats. This list has changed slightly over the years but at the moment it tentatively looks something like

    5k: sub 15.20 minutes
    4miles: sub 20.30 minutes
    5 miles: sub 25.30 minutes
    10 miles: sub 52 minutes
    half mara: sub 72 minutes
    marathon: sub 2.40

Again these times are not exactly correlated, obviously 4 miles in 20.30 would be easier than sub 25.30 minutes. he marathon is the only one I've achieved. Some of the others are achievable but some are probably out of my reach. I guess they are times I aspire to and while I may never reach them they are the reason I get out the door.

Just wondering what other peoples bucket list of running times looks like.

Running (pun intended) the risk of being ridiculed due to my lack of consistent training amongst other things, I do have a couple of ideas in my head for this.

    Initially a sub 20 min 5K and eventually a sub 16 minute 5k.
    A sub 35 minute 10K.

Those are the only distances so far I've given any sort of thought to in this regard. Whether I ever get anywhere close is a different matter.

    I'll second those

    Initial goals:

    100m - Sub 13 seconds
    200m - Sub 27 seconds
    400m - Sub 60 seconds
    800m - Sub 2:25

Obviously some will come easier than others.

I don't want to set limits for myself as I really dont know what I am capable of. Will have a better idea after a full track season but sure I might aswell stick down some fluffy clowd type goals for the craic.

    100m - Sub 12.5 seconds
    200m - Sub 26 seconds
    400m - Sub 57 seconds
    800m - Sub 2:15

Focus is on getting sub 60 first and none of this sky's the limit crap until then.

My bucket list is something like this:

    10k: sub 35
    5 miles: sub 30
    10 miles: sub 60
    half marathon: sub 1.20
    Marathon: sub 3.
Comrades: Silver medal - sub 7.30.

To date, I've only done the marathon and the 5 mile. I've revised my lifetime goal in the marathon down to sub 2.50. Don't know if it'll ever happen but it's a goal.

The most achieveable one of these, but the one I will be most proud of, would be the Comrades silver medal. They reckon you need to be in sub 3 shape for that, which would be fine, but the endurance to run at 3.30 marathon pace for 90 odd kilometres would be savage.

For next year just really these 3 and I'd be a happy chappy.

    800m - sub 2:20
    1500m - sub 5:00
    1/2 marathon - sub 1:29

Go a year uninjured - then anything would be possible

Comrades: Silver medal - sub 7.30.

Actually that's one I forgot to add. In general terms I have no interest in ultra events with the exception of Comrades. This is a race I always had an interest in running. I don't know enough about the course to give a realistic time goal but would love to think (again I'm shooting for the stars) I could put the equivalent of 2 back to back 3 hour marathons together, comrades is actually a bit further ~56 miles so 6.50 pace the whole way would be legendary in my own eyes.

PS if one of the mods could correct my spelling in this thread title it would be much appreciated.

    .

Wally Hayward medal for sub 6... based on your recent marathon, no reason not to aim for something like that. I'm of the same opinion on ultras, I'll probably only ever do a couple of them but Comrades has some sort of a spell over me. My wife reckons if I ever do it, I'll start talking up Badwater and some of the other mad ones!!

    Marathon: sub 3.
Comrades: Silver medal - sub 7.30.

Those two are on my list as well. it took me 7 years for the first one!

I managed to hold 3:30 marathon pace for 39 miles in Connemara last year, so maybe I do have a shot at the Comrades Silver medal as well. My main problem at the moment isn't lack of endurance but lack of money to finance that trip, though! :(

My wife already knows about Badwater ... :o

I did the Dunboyne 4 mile race last year and found it tough going and while I didn't finish last, I wasn't far off it. I can't remember my exact time but it was around the 56 minute mark.

I'd love to do it next year (March) and finish closer to the 40 minute mark.

Ha, for once, I looked like the most sensible runner in the room of pacers down in Dingle. If I'm ever told I'm a nutter for going out for 15 mile runs in the middle of a storm or 23 miles on packed snow and ice, I'll just bring up some of the stories you lot had!!!

I think you should be thinking longer term than 1 year if you are talking Bucket list.

If you you're a newcomer to runner (i.e didn't run as a child/teenager) then subtract the number of years you have been running from 10 and I think you're left with the number of years left to continually improve, regardless of the age you took up running (i.e if you took running at 40, you shoud get faster with age rather than slower up to age 50 or so)

Would love to run <2:30 marathon and sub 54min 10 mile - reckon I've about 5/6 years left in me to get there.

I'm sort of clinging onto this idea as well. I only started running just over a year ago and I'm in my early 30's. So I'm hoping that leaves me lots of room for improvement, especially once I shift the excess weight.

    Sub 2 min 800m
    Sub 16 min 5K

Much as I'd like to believe you peak after 10 years, I don't expect to achieve these unless I can reverse aging.

Wow, now that gives me a lot of hope and is exactly what I needed to hear !

I'm only running 6 months or so and I'm 38 years of age. It would be great to think that I can improve for the next 9 years or so !

I'd absolutely love to sometime get close to a 3hr marathon, or maybe just hit the Boston qualifying time.

The recent Dublin Half Marathon is the longest I've run to date, time 1:44:28.

A lot of work for me to do, but you really have given me an extra buzz with your comment. :)

    Ok, my list :-

    5k : 19 minutes
    8k : 31 minutes
    10k : 40 minutes
    HM : 1 hour 30 minutes
    Marathon : 3 hours

These dont make much sense but what the hell,

Marathon - sub 3 ( the monkey on my back at the moment)
    Half - sub 80
    10 mile - sub 60
    5 mile - sub 30
    10k - sub 35

    I like nice round numbers

    Marathon - sub 2.30
    Half - sub 70
    10 mile - sub 51
    10k - sub 32
    5k - Sub 15
    1500m - Sub 4
    800 - Sub 2

Very lofty targets but I reckon if I can keep progress up and be consistent I can coming within touching distance of some though shorter distances will prob be the hardest

Getting to the start line of Dublin and getting around in one peice, in a somewhat respectable time [respectable time for me!]

I will worry about times and other distances in a few weeks :)
