Operating System not found

I have a Fujitsu Siemens Lifebook P1510. I installed Ubuntu on a partition drive (on Wednesday night) which worked fine. When it restarted it asked which OS I wanted to start and I could use either. I normally use XP with this laptop and worked all day yesterday with it (in XP). After finishing work, rather than shut it down, which I always do, I set it to Hibernate. When I got home and opened it, it was on, but said 'Operating System not found'
After some research it seems likely that either the partition is active or the hard drive is dead. The latter seems a bit coincidental to me given what I've done to it over the past couple of days.
I thought I'd throw it open for discussion before I bring it in for repairs somewhere.
    Thanks.
