Never played any Mega Man games in my life. What is the story all about?

I have a GBA, 3ds, Wii and and X360. Is there any Mega Man games I should be looking into getting on any of these platforms?

    Thanks guys

    Forever n00b.

Wii has most of the early Mega Man games on the Virtual Console - I believe 3 & 4 are highlights?

360 / Wii have Mega Man 9 & 10. They're recent 'old-school' sequels to the original series, and they share the same gameplay / engine.

I hope you don't like your hair, because it will soon be torn out.

Mega Man is the one series that leaves me baffled as to its popularity. I never played any of the NES originals so don’t have the benefit of nostalgia when it come to the series, but did play then on the SNES and ever then they felt outdated. The Zero games on the GBA weren't bad, but even then, they felt like an overhang on the NES era.

Legend 3DS looked decent but that'll never happen now.

    You're missing out!

You won't get many good megaman games on those platforms. The game to start out with is megaman 2 which for me is the best in the series and one of the greatest games ever made. It's on the NES so easily emulated. The first game isn't that great, good but way too hard for its own good and no password system which is just cruel. It does however have the worst box art ever.

Megaman 2 though is an absolute classic. It also has one of the best videogame soundtracks ever.

After Megaman 2 try Megaman 3 which is arguably as good. After Megaman 3 the series went a bit downhill but 4-6 and 7 on the SNES are still good. 8 on the saturn and PS1 is a decent game as well.

Be warned, the megaman games in their time were criticised for being too easy. However compared to todays games they make even Demon's Souls look like a cake walk. They are perfectly fair and beatable but you might not be used to that level of difficulty.

The other Megaman series worth playing is Megaman X. The first 3 games are on the SNES and all 3 are well worth playing. 4-6 are on the PS1. 4 and especially 5 are amazing games. 6 is a piece of ****. 7 and 8 on the PS2 are also pieces of ****.

There's a spin off series of X on the GBA called Megaman zero of which there are 4 games. All of them sold terribly and are now some of the most expensive games on the system. You can however get them as a collection of all 4 games on the DS. You'll have to order from america, videogamesplus.ca still has copies last time I checked. All 4 games are amazing but they are also some of the most brutally tough games ever made.

Another Megaman series that is well worth the time and effort of playing are the Megaman Legends games released on the PS1 and consisting of MM Legends 1 and 2 and the spin-off called Misadventures of Tron Bonne. The first game is basically an Ocarina of Time type game but actually came out before ocarina of time and had some stuff in it that ocarina of time gets credited for for innovating, like Z-targeting. It's a wonderful game. MML 2 is even better since it uses dual shock controls. Misadventures of Tron Bonne is equally as good. They are some of the best looking and charmingly told tales on the system and well worth getting even though they cost a bit of money these days. MML 3 was announced by capcom for the 3DS then cancelled but might be back in development after a heap of negative fan feedback.

There's also the ZX games on the DS. the first megaman ZX is ok but has some flaws like a terrible map system. Megaman ZX Advent is a lot better. Both are super metroid type games.

On the Wii and 360 you can download two downloadable Megaman games, Megaman 9 and 10 which are done in the style of the NES megaman games. Apparently it looks better on the Wii since the graphics are closer to the NES. I've played Megaman 9 and it's amazing, up there with Megaman 2 and 3. However I'd play the NES games first because MM9 was made by inti creates, the guys behind the brutally tough Zero games and this game is just as tough. I've yet to play megaman 10 but I heard it's very good but a bit disappointing compared to the wonderful MM9.

Eh, no mention of Megaman 2? Megaman 2 and 3 are the fan favourites. Megaman 4 would be the weakest of the NES games for me.

Or, alternatively, buy a Nes and pick up a few of them in Rage...

Oh and Megaman, what's it all about?
It's about being punished, punished for thinking he'll control like a modern platform character.
    Here's a hint...
    He doesn't!
It's a pain in the backside!
I am so not a fan of the series!

Doesn't mean I don't have Megaman II on my Nes though ;)

Megaman isn't so tough except the first one.Got through megaman 1-6 in a week.

Oh Also I forgot the Megaman Gameboy games which are also really good and different from their NES counterparts. Megaman 5 is the best of them and is as good as Megaman 2 or 3.

Well MegaMan on GB is probably my favourite, I was only playing MegaMan Extreme t'other day it's totally brilliant.
MegaMan Zero on GBA is only ok and I find it kinda bland.

I'm not an expert on the series - I remember picking one up on the VC after reading up on them. Must have been 3 I ended up with.
