Does anyone on this thread know anything about aircraft leasing? Or how someone could get into that industry?

See who are hiring and apply. It would really depend on what qualifications/experience you have. I assume legal/financial/engineering experience would be desirable.

Ireland is still a large base for global leasing firms.

This is an new and so far successful Irish leasing company but no sign of recruitment on thier site.

AerCap, ILFC, RBS Aviation, GECAS, Air Lease Corp. and CIT are some of the big names in aircraft leasing.

I work in it, feel free to PM me.

Tenger has it well summed up in a nutshell though.

Does anyone know if its easy to get an INTERN in an A/C leasing Company? What would involve doing during your Internship, considering you have very little knowledge about it?
    Any experiences or advise?:D

Google a few of the leasing companies websites and you will get a flavour for the skillset that their staff have. Most have a corporate finance background, economics and languages. An ivy league university with post grad qualification seems the rule rather than the exception.

To get an internship I would suggest that you would need to be headed on that path.

Not true at all. Leasing companies hire a number of different skillsets and backgrounds. Im an engineer in one, we also have guys who worked as apprentices in the airlines.

Best way to get in is if your college has a link with industry or does a coop programme.

I had assumed the OP was interested in the front office eventually.

Thank you for your replies basil and Delta Kilo!

I don't know exactly which area of a leasing company i would pursue, but that's why i would like to undergo an Intern so i could work shadow and get the taste of the whole business!..However I think I would be more inclined towards the technical/ administrative area!

The Law Society of Ireland offer a diploma course in Aviation Leasing and Finance which might open a few doors....

Many of the lecturers are involved in the industry and helped set up the course as an entry to the business.

Despite the price, the course looks interesting. So i guess it runs once a year, only for 7 months?!

I thought I saw IT Carlow were going to offer a degree course related to leasing on the CAO but can't see anything about it now.

I worked in this industry for a few years. Unfortunately, nothing from IT Carlow is going to carry much weight.

I too am very interested in getting into this industry once I graduate.. I am currently in Final year Corporate Law in NUIG, does anyone know if this course is in any way suited to entry into this kind of work? Also I noticed this today, not sure if it is at all relevant..

Relevant for a solicitor interested in working in Aviation Finance certainly. You're best bet would be to work in one of the big commercial firms that specialise in aviation finance, and then go on secondment to one of the big aviation finance firms (mentioned above) or make a permanent switch.

So there is no real option post-grad or otherwise? It is very tough to get into one of the big commercial firms.. is there any chance of being recruited intern or otherwise by a leasing company or is through a firm the only way?

As far as I know AWAS and GECAS take interns, maybe others too. Its probably similarly competitive to the big commercial firms, depending on what sector within the aviation finance firm you want to work (not so competitive for insurance, accounts but very competitive in analysis, operations).

Yes I saw GECAS had an internship programme, thinking of applying, could be lucky! Don't know what way I'll go about it failing to get into a big firm though..

as far as i know, the diploma run by the Law Soc is only open to qualified solicitors. It used to be open to anyone. I am not certain of that, but that's what I think. Check it out anyway. I've been trying to get into the industry for a good while now and have found it very difficult to get in the door anywhere. I intend to do the Diploma later this year and maybe some other courses in between. Googe IATA and they run some courses that might be worth looking at too.

Yes there were plenty of 'non solicitors' on the first diploma course last year, mostly people from finance, other areas of aviation, CSPs, etc, but (I believe) the course was in so much demand that the LSI only offered the second one to solicitors only....

Hi, Id like to get into this area too, just trying to figure out whats the best way about it. Whats the difference between the online course and the diploma course on aircraft leasing at the law society of Ireland. How long is the course? Do you need to be a solicitor? I'm currently working in aircraft maintenance and was looking at doing either the IT Carlow course or the Law soc course. Has anyone here done the law Soc course? Thanks
