Saw someone with something similar at a 24hr race in the UK. Possibly the only excuse for one really.

How hard is it to take out a bottle and apply manually every couple of rides?

Used them on motorbikes in the past.

I think it's over kill for bicycles though. Could seem myself spending more time cleaning oil off my stays and wheels.

Motorbikers have been using Scottoilers for donkeys years, why don't you ask on motorbike forum? I was never a fan of them myself but a lot of bikers swear by them.

Scott Oilers have been around a long time in the motorbike space, so they are well proven to prolong chain and sprocket life. The trick is in setting them up accurately. I'd expect these to be worthwhile if you are doing regular long distances and/or find it difficult to keep up a preventative maintenance regime on your bike.

I had a quick look at that forum and they seem to like them but I wanted to hear what people on this bike forum thought.

Another set of questions come to mind about bike chain maintenance routines - how often do people clean/lube their chain/sprockets etc? After every ride or after every 10/50/100km? What sort of lube would you recommend?

On a related point, can anyone recommend a good lube that stays relatively clear?

I find the wet lubes look manky very quickly.
