After reading a few threads there and what Im currently going through made me want to help others out.

This is going to sound crap:( but I tried to volunteer for animal shelters a few years ago and was astounded at the difficulty/lack of response.

I dont have a family and so have spare time on my hands to help others.Have any of you given your time to those in need?

Any strange/discouraging/encouraging tales to tell? What are some of the volunteer/soup kitchens/outreach groups like?

    Mods feel free to redirect.

You could try volunteering for Childline, or one of those. They always seem to be looking for volunteers I think, you have to do some training with them first though.

I'm just after recently getting involved with Order Of Malta and find it a good laugh so far (only there just over a month, so..). A voluntary ambulance group, Civil defence or coast guard duty could be good. Voluntary, and when you're needed, no doubt extremely rewarding. :)

You could volunteer in a hospice, I've recently seen how lonely some of the people are in their last days. You will not be accepted if you have lost someone within 12 months. Harolds Cross hospice and St. Francis hospice really do amazing work and can do with all the help they can get.

I joined a website that allows you to help people who have wrong ideas by telling them that they are full of sh!t.

It's purely voluntary, but immensely rewarding.

I feel I am really making a difference.

Sounds great. Can you punch them in the face as well?

All I know on that score is that you are absolutely not allowed to KICK them in the face.

And that personifies a certain type of poster who seems to find this forum conducive to their mentalité.

Luckily, not really representative of Ireland, even in these post-Celtic Kitten cynical times.

OP, you may find this forum more helpful! :)

I think you've taken that post a little too seriously.

If you equate a post like that to someones "mentality" then more fool you

    Delighted to hear it.

And yes, I am being serious in saying that!

Unfortunately though, that is the vibe this forum gives to a lot of people, and part of the reason why I constantly hear from long-standing posters around the site that they wouldn't come near AH if they were paid.

Going on the fact that I still post in here, you might rightly deduce that I can see more than one facet of the place. :)

The Simon Community, they get very busy coming into the colder weather and could probably do with extra hands.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,205 ✭✭✭Yi Harr

I used to help out with meals on wheel, especially around Christmas time. It was a bit of a pain in the arse though as you only had a limited amount of time with each person so couldn't really stay and chat.

Have a look at Volunteer.ie, they seem to have a load of volunteer opportunities and have a fairly good searchable (by area and type of volunteering) database.
