Buying Wedding Dress on eBay

I'm so annoyed! Found "the dress" that I'd tried on here in Dublin on eBay, brand new and unworn. Was outbid in the last 10 seconds. I hate eBay! So frustrated, the dress was half the price of buying it here. Was delighted with myself thinking I had it sorted. More fool me :(
Anyone know a smart way of winning this apparent eBay battle next time so I don't get screwed again?!

A technique called "sniping" im told is quite effective

Yeah I heard about sniping alright. I just think it's the most cynical way of doing it. Should be banned, totally negates (word?!) the point of eBay in my opinion! So disappointed :(

Thats awful, Ebay should have a CAPTCHAs service to prevent snipers

It is rather annoying. The only way that seems to combat this is snipe bidding. You put in the maximum you are willing to pay and the snipe bid will keep bidding for you every time someone else bids. It won't go above your maximum bid though so if someone else is using snipes bids and has a higher maximum they will win the auction.

What I usually do it wait until the last few seconds and then put in my bid of the highest amount I'm willing to pay. If anyone has a higher amount as their max, they'll obviously still win, but it eliminates putting in a price and being bid up and up, and if you don't win, then it went for more than you were willing to pay for it anyway.

I don't think it should be stopped at all, it just means that the highest bidder gets the item, which is what ebay is about anyway.
