Just wondering if there are any Ligue 1 followers out there who know how Joe Cole is getting on with Lille?

Don't follow it too closely myself.

Was always interested in seeing how some more English players would get on in some of the European leagues as very few tend to leave England.

Its probably a reference to Steven Gerrard's comments last year

I knew that but Gerrard didn't say he was better than Messi AFAIK.

Granted Gerrard's comments were still ridiculous

Great first goal he got. Thought Liverpool had pulled a stroke getting him last year on a free but just didnt kick on through injury and poor form.

Would like to see a few more English players (none of Uniteds!!) go and test themselves abroad and see how they would get on.

Can only remember McManaman and Beckham off the top of my head as high profle players who tried it in the last 10-15 years, both done fairly decent.

He's no Messi but he is an excellent footballer, just didn't show it at Liverpool.

Gerrard said he can do everything Messi can do, maybe even better! Like with a golf-ball! The papers headlined it as:

Joe Cole is better than Lionel Messi, claims Liverpool's Steven Gerrard
Steven Gerrard believes Liverpool are set for a bright new era under Roy Hodgson after the "horror" of last season – and claims that the new signing Joe Cole is better than Barcelona's Lionel Messi.

Gerrard, in an interview with Match of the Day magazine, said the new manager has already given Liverpool a lift after a disappointing seventh-place finish last season.

"It's a great club and after speaking with Roy Hodgson I'm really pleased to see his plans for the club. It's a new era now – we must forget about the horror of what happened last season and get this club back to where it belongs, which is the Champions League at the very least."

Gerrard said Cole, signed in July on a Bosman from Chelsea, has the ability to drive the team forward.

"[Lionel] Messi can do some amazing things, but anything he can do Joe can do as well, if not better. He used to shock us in training by doing footy tricks with a golf ball that most players can't even do with a football. I really fancy Joe for the [player of the year] award this season."

Michael Owen as well though much less successful

Cake, and grief counseling, will be available at the conclusion of the test

Tony Cascarino was relatively successful in France, similar skill level to Cole.

Indeed he was, he scored a lot of goals for Nancy and Marseille. I remember tuning into eurogoals on eurosport to watch his goal highlights. It was funny cos the commentator Archie McPherson used to commentate as if the game was live even though it was obvious he knew a goal was coming up:)

Yeah forgot about Owen and Woodgate. Both could have prospered but for Owen not being given a proper chance with the Galacticos and Woodgates injury jinx.

Was just referring to English players, big Cas was as Irish as they come! ;) Did well in France in fairness though.

There's a Ligue 1 highlight show on TV5 (799 on Sky) Mondays at 8pm, if anyone is interested. Only found out about it myself a few weeks ago. French language.

Good luck to Joe .... I think he is a quality player , thick as two short planks , but a quality player.

    As for Englishmen abroad

Kevin Keegan did a pretty good job , so did Gazza.......

The French League is ranked as 5th best in Europe. God help us if the 5th best is "incredibly ****e"

    Why not Irish players?
Used to follow Padraig Amond on the tweet machine when he was in Portugal...it's just not the same when he's on loan at Accrington Stanley Him and Barry Maguire over there in Holland :D

I think I've answered my initial question myself

Liam Brady won 2 Serie A titles while with Juventus.

Lineker also did well enough at Barcelona while he was there.

Rushy said last year he never made that comment, it was a team mate at Liverpool having a joke.

I remember Vinny Samways having relative success in Spain, someone mentioned Owen not being given a proper chance at Madrid... might have had something to do with Ronaldo. Not many strikers in football history would displace Ronaldo from a team

Steve Archibald had a good stint in Barcelona

And Trevor Steven did well alongside Waddle in Marseille

Lineker did brilliantly until he had some sort of falling out with Cruyff, who proceeded to play him on the wing for the rest of his time there.

As a result Lineker wrote a "fictional" book (in Spanish) -

Donde esta el delantero centro ?

    Where's the centre forward ?

No mention of the most successful of all the Irish exports? Juventus's most promising newcomer, despite only ever playing 1 game as a sub. Also Times Magazine's man of the CENTURY! But was taken out of the running due to political reasons.

I give to you Bray's own.... Ronnie O'Brien.

Ok the thread has moved on a bit now

I give you Jimmy Greaves ........ did a stirling job at Milan 12 games 9 goals .....

Just imagine playing away like that in 1961 !!

"2 bob" Clive Allen scored 21 goals in 30 games for Bordeaux

Dominic Foley has a decent enough record in Belgium the last few years, he played in Portugal aswell..

Alan Mahon had a spell in Portugal early in his career aswell.

Good (if a bit sad) game to play with mate, take in turns to name british or irish player that played in European league football, passed a few mins anyway

Don't think these have been mentioned yet,

    Woodgate
    McManaman
    Ince
    Keegan
    Collins
    Platt
    Gazza
    Boothroyd
    Lambert
    Archibald

Matt Darbyshire at Olympiacos is another one that springs to mind. According to Wikipedia he got 6 goals in under 20 appearances as well, with two of them coming in the Greek cup final having only come on as a substitute at half time.

Platt did a decent job in Italy at different clubs, Wilkins was at Milan and Souness played for a time in Italy as well.

Keegan would be well known in Germany but Michael Robinson, ex Liverpool played in Spain in the 80's.
