The name James Toney shouldn't even be put in the same sentence as "focused " and "in shape" these days, because it's never going to happen i'm afraid :(

He'll come in fat as ****, the old Toney is gone, this is a slurring, shameful shadow of his once classy self.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,325 ✭✭✭gene_tunney

People here seem to be unaware of Toney's recent current spurt of motivation and weight loss. Besides, he can not turn up out of shape because this fight will take place at cruiserweight, which is below 200lbs.

That said, Toney is done. His speech is slow and slurred, and the content of his diatribes almost suggest dementia. He is extensively brain damaged and should no longer be allowed to box.

Could still be a good fight though. :o

    Brain Damaged? Bit strong.

Guy is just so so durable, slick and tough. His style allows this to
be competitive I think. His experience and ring savvy alone make
    it intriguing.

If he is not brain damaged then why is he slurring his speech?

His speech was always ropey. Just getting ropier. He was never a fighter who took too much punishment in fights. Not saying this means he cannot get damaged, but I doubt he has any "noticeable" brain damage.

Anyway, looking forward to the fight. I think the buig challenge will be to get to 200 lbs.
He said he will get there so that Lebedev will have no excuses when he kicks his ass.

Toney has been documented as saying he took a lot of damage in sparring perfecting his shoulder roll.

People say Evander Holyfield needs to retire. Holyfield has boxed 443 rounds, Toney has boxed 628, and a beating off Randy Couture on top of that. That's too much.

    Compare his speech here:

    to his speech here:

Both interviews are hilarious BTW! :D

I like Toney but he's done. When a boxer starts to show signs of brain damage (ie slurred speech), that means the damage is extensive. Many boxers are brain damaged but it takes years to manifest symptoms. Toney is symptomatic already, which means he is en route to pretty bad brain damage whoich will manifest more and more as the years go by.

My apologies for the rant, I'm pretty interested in the issue of brain damage in boxing and have read up a good bit on it.

I agree with all your points. I just think that despite him being clearly past it he can still do well in this fight.

    Great video

Just why I love Toney as a fighter. So so relaxed, calm and effortless. Afraid of no man, never ducks anyone, and is just so smooth and so tough.

Ain't that Buddy McGirt in there with him? Toney looks a lot trimmer.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,986 ✭✭✭Spazdarn

A hell of a lot trimmer delighted he looks to be fighting at an acceptable weight...

If his slurred speech is symptomatic of brain damaged, why would anyone be eager to see a well past his prime Toney back in the ring.
Whats the satisfaction in seeing a once great fighter in action long after his glory days?
He going to endure further unnecessary punishment against half decent opposition.

Well you could say that about any number of boxers.

Fans will always watch because there's always an outside chance these guys will show glimpses of their former brilliance.

Fair enough. It just seems a recipe for frustration from my perspective. To see the likes of Roy Jones continuing to fight over the last few years is a prime example. At least in Roy's case he isn't showing signs of slurred speech.

and at least in Toney's case he isn't getting KTFO...;)

That's true. Being knocked out is a far worse fate, than having long term neurological issues.

Neither Jame nor Roy have officially been declared brain damaged. Toney's speech was never all that good anyway. Jones's KO losses were pretty bad, and could well have affected him badly.

Watching those videos it's clear James Toney's speech has gotten a lot worse in recent times. While the knock outs of Roy Jones have been bad, there is no sign so far of his speech being slurred listening to his HBO commentary. Although if he continues fighting that may soon change. It maybe neither man is brain damaged, but currently there is more evidence to suggest Toney is. What can be said definitely is the two men are well past it and should both pack it in. Neither are going to reign supreme again.

It's great to see he can get himself into some shape just hope we don't see him getting ko'd badly like roy in his last few fights. I'm a big fan of both fighters by the way.

The fight's gonna be shown on box nation next Friday with the programme starting at 6pm our time

Well, of al the fighters I have ever seen, James is the one that I think is the most difficult to TKO/KO. So, unless he just leaves the chin there to be clean tagged, then I reckon he cannot get knocked out.

Can't wait for this. Will be watching it live on television. The Weights Are In

For Tomorrow's Fight: James Toney 199, Denis Lebedev 197.5
By James Slater: Well, James "Lights Out" Toney has already proved a heck of a number of fight fans wrong! Ever since his cruiserweight fight with Denis Lebedev was announced, know it alls everywhere said Toney, now 43 years of age, would under no circumstances make the 200-pound limit. Such negativity was, moments ago in Moscow, Russia, blown away,as the modern day legend tipped in at a pound below the cruiser limit. Lebedev, much the younger man, came in at 197 and a half for the battle that will contest the interim WBA belt.

Both men looked great, it must be said; with Toney weighing his lightest weight since way back in 2003. The question now is, is Toney merely a good looking empty shell - much the same way the great Muhammad ALI was ahead of his big fight with Larry Holmes in 1980?

As fans know, that title fight wound up being a sad affair. Has Toney made weight the correct way? going by the way he looked whilst on the scale We can presume he has. We will, however, only know for sure when the bell rings and We reach the later rounds tomorrow!

for what its worth, I'm picking Toney to pull off the win that will rejuvenate his career.

thanks for the quick reply walshb. Really looking forward to seeing what Toney has left in the tank, hope he can wind back the clock for this one.....

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,986 ✭✭✭Spazdarn

Only about 10 mins now I'd say

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,325 ✭✭✭gene_tunney

Toney getting bounced around by Lebedev in a one-sided affair. He's making RJJ's performance against Lebedev look very good.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,325 ✭✭✭gene_tunney

Toney's corner should have stopped this after the 9th. Disgraceful.

clancy, screwed up my times big time, sorry. I had thought the programme started at 1800. It's on since 1500 hrs. I almost missed this drubbing myself.

It had nothing to do with shape IMO. The man is just shot to ****.

I know. I was commenting on those who seemed to imply he had a chance in this fight because he looked in good shape. As you say it doesn't matter how trim someone is, if their past it.

Jesus, I'm just looking at a rerun of this fight and for the first time in my life I actually feel sorry for James Toney.

He is absolutely atrocious. No balance. No timing. No co-ordination. This man has to be saved from himself. No more please. Retire.

Just watching this guy - Ukranian Ismayl Sillakh - and have to say I'm very, very impressed. Has to be one of the classiest up-and-comers out there in terms of style and fundamentals. Everything coming off a beautiful fast, stiff jab.

Keep an eye out for him.
