    Ok another scenario;

    I am a motor dealer
    Have premises, website, dealer number, vat number
    Pay my taxes, vat etc
    I want to import cars and be able to get them vrt'd if customers require them to be vrt'd...? whats my situation?

    I might be wrong here but without a TAN number, if you bring in a car, you are bound by the same laws as private people, i.e. you have to VRT it straight away and cannot hold the foreign car on your forecourt or anything.
    A TAN number will allow you to hold multiple foreign regd cars in this state and only VRT once sold.
    Open to correction on this.

    You certainly cannot sell them on here while still on the foreign plate so your statement about vrting them if customers want that doesnt make sense

    AFAIK that's the way it works. I thought there was some kind of bond associated with having a TAN.

    Are you saying a dealer with a TAN number can sell a uk reg car to a private individual here without vrt paid?

    No you cannot do it. AFAIK you can lose your TAN number from doing this.
