    Good to hear.

Not the greatest news to be honest.

If the Premier League stop selling their rights to foreign broadcasters in the footprint of Britain it just strengthens Skys monopoly and obviously limits choice.

Yes, but Big Daddy EU would then step in and regulate them($ky) as a monopoly, but then I don't see that happening any time soon:(

    That's not going to happen.

    Maybe not.

But if the ruling is upheld and several thousand pubs decide to legally get their football from a Greek, Albanian or whatever provider then sky will lose an absolute fortune and so will the Premier league.

Some action will have to be taken.

    It may well happen.
Of the £1.4bn (for 3 years) the Premier League earns from selling its rights abroad, just £130m, less than 10 per cent, comes from Europe.
In comparison Sky pays £1.8bn over the three years 2010-2013.
The tv revenue from mainland Europe is minute in comparison to the UK rights so a mainland blackout may be an option.
The days of cheap foreign providors are gone ,Greek,Albanian tv EPL rights will no longer be sold cheaply,if at all.
Sky UK will probably buy the rights for all of Europe and create commercial tv licences pan Europe via other providors which will be the same price as in the UK.

Dont forget the last time something about Premier League deals went to Europe, the rights ended up being split and the public ending up paying more - you pay for Sky and then have to pay for Setanta/ ESPN for the rest.

I'm sure Sky and the Premier League will find some loophole to manouver themselves out of this.

Sky will find someway around this but a mainland blackout is never going to happen.

great news , maybe now sky might get their fingers out .
pubs all over the country already do this ,
I watch all my football online , prem, Italian , Spanish as well as the NFL , i'm sure many , many pubs around the world do this

In germany you can walk into any pub and watch all live games 1 on each tv screen ...........so you get to see your team live each week ,
same in most asian countries/cities , hong kong , Thailand , etc

    Its not good news....
If you read the ruling clearly...She's won the case...won't be prosecuted but pubs still cant show the games as the judge as said that the premeir league logo/music is copyright and when the broadcaster transmits this it is only intended for a single client not a commercial premisis.

So if pubs show the foriegn feed they can get prosecuted. So what have pubs won??? Nothing.

Your right...this is not great news at all...this could basically end up with no 3pm game broadcast in europe. So karen murphy could have done more damage in the long term. Good for her for not paying the charges ..winning that but I think if she had settled this out of court with threating to take sky to court it would have been better.

Your right again..sky will never lose out..landlords on LJ's are celebrating but they still can't show the games.

They were saying on the radio that the games themselves were not copyright but the music and match clips were. So they said the pubs could get away with switching the matches on at kick off time. This could be BS but I'm not a lawyer so can't confirm or deny.

It looks like the High court in England has to interpret the Europeans courts findings before making a ruling so it is unclear how this will affect places like pubs.

The premeir league logo always stays on the screen. They could also have it appear in any corner of the screen at anytime. Just can't see how they can get away with that.

There is lots the premier League can do. They could have the logo zoom up on the screen for a replay. That could do it.

Its kinda like Fifa and Pro Evolution Soccer

Fifa have the rights Pro Evo doesnt. They cant use the Premier League logo . I dont know if the rights will extend to teams .

with the amount of pubs closing i think its about time someone tackled sky and their high prices for pub/club/hotel subscriptions. They charge far too much and how can they justify charging a household £80 a month for a full subscription and a pub/hotel / club £500 + for theirs .......

It's another nail in the coffin especially for rural pubs who rely on a local customer base. When they now cannot go down to their local now to have a smoke indoors ,watch their sport , or by the sounds of new drink driving laws have one pint without being over the limit.

There should be a broad umbrella of companies who should have the rights to show live sports events and it should not be at such a high price to the consumer.

Well done Karen Murphy , but this case is far from over.
