    Anyone played here recently?
Going to check it out this week to maybe get membership.
Either here or South Meath golf course.
South Meath is cheaper but doesn't look as good.

    Anyone played either?

Played both, I'd say keep ur money in ur pocket. Not goin 2 slag courses off, but "farmland" golf comes 2 mind on both. If ur lookin at courses in that area try Rathcore.

How much is membership in the glebe

You could try Co. Meath Golf Club (Trim) or Knightsbrook (Trim). Knightsbrook is a fairly new Christy O'Connor designed course that looked for €10k entrance money a few years ago. I was offered membership for a join on fee of €500 last year but I'd imagine you would get in for no entrance fees these days. Annual sub is €1,000. Gavin Hunt is the Director of golf there. Give him a call.

    thanks lads
to be honest i'm just starting out really.
played for a few years but probably 1 or 2 times a year but now want to get my handicap and have somewhere to go and play should i want to on my days off without having to worry about green fees.
Will have a look at rathcore and knightsbrook but i think both are a bit above my budget.

Depending on where abouts in Trim/Meath you are could also be worth considering Headfort in Kells (25km from Trim). If I was within that sort of distance it's where I'd be joining. I believe they were doing membership last year for around the €900 mark which gives you access to two fine courses although having said that I've never actually played the old course.

Isn't Knightsbrook in NAMA or Receivership ? .. Great test of golf in fairness and if the financial outlook is relatively assured short-term I'd defo give it a bounce ... might be a tad tough for a guy just starting out tho

A round for two and lunch in the knightsbrook for €55. I hear it's a lovely course.

Did you ask them to qualify their financial situation ? ..... just to try and make sure that your DD payments don't fall into a black hole should the whole thing go belly up ..

rathcore is around 850 & co meath the same. def worth stretching to the extra couple of hundred if you can and avoid the glebe, imho.
i would imagine theyre open to the pay per month option too.

i didn't but is it not safer to pay by the month. because if it does go belly up i just stop the DD

I'm the same just curious..I remember few years back they were looking €5000 crazy ..

OP rathcore is great value at €859 and you can spread the payments over the year..

Yeah that's true .. unless that 2 year deal you mentioned requires for the 2nd year to be paid in advance ? ...

just called them there. you can pay the 859 over 6 months from January to June.
Not bad. It's an extra 10km away from me than knightsbrook would be.
Now's the decision between Knightsbrook and Rathcore...hmmm

I'm a member since '06. Dont think the course is in NAMA or in receivership. Not unless it happened since about two weeks ago......

    you're a member of knightsbrook?
    how do you find it?

Lads, if something is in NAMA it's probably the best place to be.

All the good developers are in it now (if you aren't in Nama, means you were nothing during the boom boom :D:D)

Reading all these threads about amazing membership deals, shame I am too far away from any of them to seriously consider..

Cheers Johnny that answers the question so. Its a crackin course having played it off the tips too. Certainly the best course in that area. I would suggest tho its slightly too tough for a beginner?

im not a member of either but would consider rathcore or headfort new (if you consider it in the area) to be far superior layouts to knightsbrook. i actually quite like playing kb as you can open the shoulders and the greens are so big its very hard to miss them but there not a whole lot to the course bar the last few holes.

LOL.. You extended the "area" I'd mentioned a bit further than what I meant ... Certainly KB doesn't compare to the likes of Headfort New .. which we played on the Wednesday Open off the blues .. so low was the AWAY SS, that it was a reduction only event for visitors .. 30 points of hardship for nada :(

its a fairly serious track.....sure there is a bit of space, but for the junior solheim cup, they stopped cutting the rough and it gave the course much more definition.

I think Headfort new is a special track though, one of the very finest around.

Knightsbrook has a a relatively small membership (around 200 I think now) and there is a very decent bunch of people involved in running the club. Getting tee times on saturdays and sundays is pretty handy aswell......

    pm me for more

Pajo, I live in Trim & was considering this about a year ago. I joined Co Meath (Trim ) Golf Club and am so glad that I made that decision for the following reasons

    1. No effective joining on fee - I paid 1500 eur for about 15 months. I hear that they were selling memberships earlier in the year for just the sub.

    2. Co Meath is not as long a course as Knightsbrook but it is still an excellent course. If you are playing every weekend you will get around in about 3 and a half to four hours....Knightsbrook will be longer. I think Co. Meath would be better in that sense for you starting out.

    3. There is a great online booking system with a good number of members playing and you can book to play with many different players over the year. I am not sure if you would have the same flexibility in Knightsbrook.

    4. The course is owned by and run for the members. People say that is a big factor - I havent been in enough clubs to comment but can confirm that there is a great atmosphere among the members in Trim & they make everyone welcome (though I am sure Knightsbrook & Rathcore are also very welcoming).

Regarding the other local clubs, Headfort is fantatsic. Its years since I played Royal Tara so I cant comment. Rathcore is a nice course and good value.

Glebe is only ok. They missed their chance to get members in a number of years ago when joining up fees were high. I wouldnt join it but it is not a bad course - just not in the same league as Trim, Knightsbrook etc. South Meath has improved a little but probably my least favourite of that group of courses.

You should give Co. Meath (Trim) a call and see how their fees compares to Knightsbrook, Rathcore etc.

I was a little concerned with this aspect as I was told that you would generaly have to play with a regular grouping each week. I would prefer to pick times each week or not play as my circumstances suit. I have found with young kids that the best laid plans sometimes have to be changed so I prefer to generally book late in the week for a lot of weekends and also play with different members.

However, everyone is different and some like to play with the same group at the same time every weekend.

Thanks Lads for all the replies
@Johnny_Fontaine: will send you a PM just have a couple of questions

@dixiefly: Thanks for all the info. I did contact Co.Meath through the website but never got contacted. So rang them and was told they would have someone ring me back which never happened so i didn't consider them because i couldn't find a price. will give them a ring tomorrow

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,098 ✭✭✭Johnny_Fontane

I would say that 50% of the members in Knightsbrook came from Trim.

We also have the online booking system, so you really can go with who you like when you like. I joined in '06 and didnt know a single member but know most of them now.

If there is no price difference between trim and knightsbrook, I would play both, take a look at boths facilities, weigh it up and decide from there.

I think for a beginner, your best bet is to play society golf for the first year, get practicising hard. There is no rush on this, both courses will be there next year, you'll know where you stand then.

Green fees are so cheap these days that paying €1000 euro a year is probably not worth it for a first timer.

Best time to ring is probably 10am to 2pm afaik. Ask to be put through to the office. You can pm me if you wish.

I am not sure how much golf you plan to play etc and whether paying with societies is better for you - just commenting on my own thinking regarding joining.

I agree with Johnny that you should play both courses, sample the facilities, try & talk to some members or get advice from others that are members of clubs etc. I agree that the clubs will still be looking for members next year.

Just wondering what is society golf?
    Thanks

Society golf. It just a group of people that play golf together. There is a boards.ie society. I played with them once. Sound lads and very welcoming. Don't let some of the comments on here put you off!!.
Society's can generally get good deals from clubs due to numbers playing. It is a good way to start golf as there is no pressure.

Thanks for the info. My dh used to play golf years ago and liked it. However it is difficult to motivate him to take it up again. I was looking at club membership but maybe society golf is the way to get him started.
