It's time to invest in a new wintercoat and ive come across a nice navy one. However work uniform is black shoes and trousers. Question is does navy and black go together?

I actually actually think it can work. It depends on the actual shades but I've worn navy dresses (that were more blue than black) with black tights/leggings and they looked grand

I don't think one needs to be so concerned when it comes to outerwear (or for that matter tights - I always wear black tights with navy, and I have A LOT of navy) as it's not so much part of an outfit as an item in itself.

I wouldn't wear a black suit jacket over navy, cause I'd be wearing it all day, but don't have an issue with navy coats that I take off when I get to work.

It depends on what shade of navy it is.

I think a navy dress with black tights/leggings looks fine.

It doesn't really matter when it comes to coats etc, it might look better to get a navy one as wearing all black can be a bit much.
