Moral Question: Going to Rovers vs. Spurs

So I've been thinking about this a lot and can't really come to terms with it so I thought I'd post it up.

I'm a United fan, I don't follow LOI for whatever reasons which are irrelevant. However I'd be keen on going to the Spurs game, as I haven't been to the stadium yet (literally a stones throw away from where I grew up) and primarily I love watching Spurs.

I'm pretty sure I can get tickets one way or another (buying a season ticket and then a match ticket would be well below the cost of one of my trips to United), however:

    A. I wouldn't want to take seats away from actual Rovers fans, as that'd be pretty cunty.

    B. On some level, it kinda grates me that some guy would show up to watch United just because they were playing a good team. At the same time, if we needed the money, I'd prefer he filled the seat than it left empty. Ultimately, all things considered, I'd probably want the money from the ticket.

    Opinions?

They'll be happy with your money, and there's extra seating in so any Rovers fan should be easily able to get a ticket. Go if you want to *shrugs*

Cake, and grief counseling, will be available at the conclusion of the test

Ahh FFS your not robbing a Granny of her pension .

Pay your money, go the game, enjoy .

    Simples !

Maybe buy the season ticket, but appease this quasi guilt of yours by attending another 5-10 LOI games.

You might enjoy yourself, you never know.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 21,235 ✭✭✭✭flahavaj

Go, maybe you'll be taken in by the atmosphere and get the urge to keep going back.

AFAIK the place wasn't 100% full for the Ruben game so you certainly won'y be robbing a seat on a die hard fan, who'll already haver sorted their tickets long ago.

If Rovers managed to get even 100 lads like you to go regularly on the back of their EL run it'll all have ben worth it.

I just wish Spurs would put it on a big screen in White Hart Lane, I'd love to go then, make a real day out of it.

Buy a ticket and go. You will be getting to watch a team you like to watch, and the Irish time will gain a little bit of extra cash.

Plus if the game is on at Lansdowne road, then there will be plenty of tickets for the Shamrock Rover die hards as well as those who only want to see a once off game involving Rovers.

    Is this a troll?

I couldn't do it myself. It's a step below bandwagoning/gloryhunting, because you're not even going to cheer on Rovers. I couldn't enjoy the massive disconnect between the pride and sense of occasion felt by the Rovers fans, and myself just popping along to see Spurs.

Watch the game on telly, and put that money towards a LOI season ticket you'll actually use. And then, when your LOI team has it's day in the sun, you can go and enjoy it ten times more than you would this particular game.

If there's a ticket available then pick it up and go. It's not as though you'll be jumping with joy when Spurs score like some will be.

  • Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 15,721 Mod ✭✭✭✭dfx-

I'm not sure you'd be stealing a ticket from Rovers fans. There's been plenty of opportunity for Rovers fans to get tickets and a considerable amount will have bought the set of three already.

It was different for the likes of Madrid and the Old Lady where tickets were at a premium and like gold-dust. As long as you don't cheer Spurs goals or sit in the stand with a Spurs shirt visible, I don't think many Rovers fans will care too much. I'd say most of the available tickets will be in the South Stand, so bring a brolly and maybe some sort of wind deflector :)

If you get your hands on a ticket fair and square, more than welcome. Don't forget to visit the club shop.

However, word of caution. If you are in the Rovers end, specifically the east stand, might not be wise to stand on your seat singing Spurs songs decked head to toe in Spurs gear. You will be thrown out.

    He's a United fan, I don't think that'll be an issue.

They'd be glad of the money even if they may not be getting your support as such.

Go. Die hard fans will have their tickets sewn up ages ago.

There'll be others in your position too. Wouldn't bother me personally.

Weren't you championing the LOI not a few hours ago to "barstoolers"?

Finally we have a decent debate about a LOI team which shouldn't descend into the usual crap. You have my attention.

PHB as dfx has said there has been ample opportunity for Rovers fans to buy tickets for this game. Chances are when it goes onsale as a single Rovers fans (ST & Members) will get first choice so again we will have plenty of chances. If by the time the game goes on general sale then fans have had their chance. Get a ticket and enjoy what should be a great occasion. You never know, you may even like it and go to another game next season.

Don't feel guilty, people had their chance.

Go I've been to 2 rovers games in last month or six weeks and enjoyed both of them even though they lost both games :)

    Not especially.

I was about to ask why it was phrased as 'going to see Spurs' as opposed to the event in itself, where no-one would question motives. Then I realised I don't really care.

What's the capacity of Tallagh? What's rovers average crowd? You won't be robbing any rovers fans of a ticket. And rovers would be happy with the extra cash.

I thought the only moral question would be, why support a English Team over an Irish Team ?

8200 for the game. Probably about 4k or a bit more, and about 6k who are regulars which obviously some miss every week due to other commitments.

It's 60 quid for a ticket for the game, with the PAOK game thrown in too. Tickets on sale today.

If you do go, go to the East stand. You can shout for spurs or wear a spurs jersey safely there. Especially in the family sectom towards the middle where the TV gantry is.

    Just a heads up.

I am surprised anybody would be thinking 'what will other people think' never mind post it on a public forum. If I wanted to go, for whatever reason, I would just do exactly that and go.

East Stand is sold out anyway. The only tickets available for the Spurs game will be South Stand and ......... North Stand.

    "Moral" question lol....

Unless you've shagged your best friend's missus, left a **** in his fridge and are planning to attend the match with the ticket you robbed from him, there's no moral question.

If you have done all of the above, you might as well go anyway. ;)

If you like football go. Prem and Div 1 run ins are pretty exciting at the moment so you'll get even better matches than that in the next few weeks around Dublin.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 20,558 ✭✭✭✭dreamers75

If theres tickets available assume all Rovers that can go have tickets.

if spurs a threat to your team then hope for injuries to any key players playing, simples :D

    Football fans have no morals.

Same concept as the away sectom of a pub.

Seriously though: anybody who wants a home ticket has one now so nobody loses out. Plus you don't sound like you will be cheering on spurs, you will have to pay 60 quid and you might enjoy the ground and atmosphere so its not too bad from a Rovers perspective.

It isn't intimidating at all being at rovers games. Unless you are a young child who thinks the local tallaght heads who have latched onto Rovers are intimidating but even that is rare.

You lot scream and shout, you aint intimidating.

Your fans have done you proud as fans but dont pretend people have to be worried for being opposition support. You ain't Millwall. You are a Dublin team who done good. There is nothing to be worried about.

Enjoy the run, thoroughly deserved. Just don't make posts pretending someone needs to make efforts to be safe in Tallaght Stadium, it is pathetic.

Also I am from London. Plastic? ha!

The original post was light-hearted (the east stand is where our singing support is and sold out) as anybody that read the whole thread could see.

Still wouldn't advise any adults to wear Spurs shirts in most parts of the ground though: at the very least the stewards might object. Not sure why that's such an amazing fact or trying to be "Millwall". I'm sure it would apply to most grounds in most countries.

As said already, the only tickets left are for the south stand and the away tickets will obviously go to THFC.

Fair enough re: London. My bad.

Won't be cheering for Spurs, don't worry, just enjoying some football :)

The only tickets left will likely be in the South stand which is behind the goal. It is uncovered so bring a raincoat.

Is 60 quid for block ticket for both remaining home games (PAOK and Spurs). No way of knowing if single tickets will be sold for Spurs yet. If these double tickets sell out, they won't.

Go. Rovers qualifying was a big deal cos it meant they'd play some big teams and might gain some new fans and help promote the league. Go and lend Rovers some support, you never know you might enjoy it enough to venture back for a league game or two.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,339 ✭✭✭me-skywalker

Go enjoy a live game of football! See the players with your own eyes and not through a vidjoe box! Get immersed in the anticipation and atmosphere. You'll get to see the live action speed of the ball, the palyers and without any replays or gob****e commentating!

The fact this is a moral issue to you is a good thing and you've thought about it. If a Rovers fan wanted to go see the match badly enough they'd find a ticket somehow.

    Enjoy the game OP
