Root Canal, travel or not?

I've been told by my local dentist that I'll probably need a molar root canal and crown to replace a large filling that is now giving trouble. They had a look at the x-ray and recon it's better if I get it done at an endodontist because the shape of the root will make it tricky. They are going to make an appointment for a local endodontist for an assesment. I've been told the root canal part will likely be around €750, with the crown costing something similar thereafter.
€1500 is an awful lot and I was wondering would I be likely to save much by going to Newry for treatment for instance? I looked up the pricelist of one dentist I was recommended and they appear to be quite a bit cheaper allright. Given that it may not be a straightforward job, am I better off going to the recommended endodontist? Could I then get the crown done up north after that to save on that part of the work?

You will not find it cheaper in the north as the endodontists there charge about the same as in the south. Also the travel, time off work and exchange rate dont make it worthwhile.

You will get a general dentist up north do it cheaper and put a low cost NHS type crown on it but outcomes will not be certain. You can get cheaper compromised quality treatment in the south also.

If you dentist thinks it requires a endodontist trust that its difficult. Also you will not require the crowns for some months after the root canal. Treatment is tax deductible.

Before somebody googles a dentist in the North that does a 300 euro molar root canal and a 400 euro crowns (these can be found in the south also), the OP need a specialist endodontist not a general dentist.

I wasn't aware it was tax decuctable, thanks for that. I take it's only at the 20% rate these days?

I did my homework here re heading off to eastern europe for a week, heading N Iron likewise and settled on a dentist on the south side of dub...lady. I needed serious work due my previous dentist was sheer lazy and didn't bother his ars@ investigating why I'd constant tooth ache, never followed up on a cracked molar despite two visits telling me i was grand which was rescued by my new d via serious work and also didn't review my previous fillings that were going on 30 yrs in situ.

Well I needed two root canals, a crown, all new fillings......if I hear the name fuji9 again I'll scream, the smell of that glue bonding stuff was horrific......finished my work yesterday and after 8 long months......hour and a half sessions in the chair. I spent a fortune but in relative terms if I've probs my new dentist who I find excellent is a phone call away unlike a flight back to Europe or a road trip up north.

It was either that or go on false teeth. My advise is talk to your dentist.....they know we are all hurting financially.....if you can work out a deal over the course of the treatment all the better....
