Okay so i have a fear of flying and it's starting to get me down, I have a wonderful gf and she's looking to go to new york in the new year, where evidently i'm going to propose.

Any tips on getting over this.

Go and talk to your Doc. My brother was terrified of flying but had to fly once for work. The Doc gave him something to calm him which he used on the flight over but ended up not needing on the way back as the first flight went so well and it ended up being more a fear of fear rather than a fear of flying.

Do you need tips on your phobia (check out the phobias forum - link under my avatar) - or tips or getting out of a proposal your heart isn't really in? Is it possible one could be triggering the other?

Lol, I've had a fear of flying since i can remember, 14 or so.
I love this girl more than i've ever loved anyone and the trip was actually my idea and now she's excited :) as it's always been my idea to propose to whomever it is in a white new york. she doesnt know im proposing but we have talked in detail about marraige kids and where we stand and we're both on the same wave length.

It's just getting over this fear, not just for the proposal but for future holidays.

Thanks for all the advice on the doc, I think I'll take it up.

It's amazing btw how some of you read into the sub conscious of me trying to avoid an engagement :) just to clarify, i've had my fun plenty of it when i was single, im ready to settle down and this girl is who i want to do it with.

Well the phrasing used did point in that direction :p

I also know Aer Lingus do a course which helps people with fear of flying so you could check that out online. Good luck.

Glad to hear the evidently is caused by your lack of faith that you'll get there rather than anything else! :)

First stop, the Docs - then you could perhaps look into hypnotherapy or examining what part of flying you are scared of ie small spaces, and start trying to tackle those while on the ground.

    Best of luck!

Ah ye, it's stemmed from 14, i think i watched final destination 2 weeks prior to a school tour and that's where it's all started, mind you i did get on that plane, was extremely nervous taking off but flying back i was grand and entered the cock pit, i think it's just built up since then and im now even more afraid compared to that initial time.

Well im heading to the docs before i get it done, so wish me luck, thanks all for the replys, if anyone is interested i'll pop back in and let you know how the proposal went, that is if i don't crash :)

i love flying, i fly at least 60 times a year through work, sport or just holidays and i love it, i even did flying lesson last and flew the plane myself.

i feel safe as a passenger and cant wait to go on my next flight. just relax, put trust in your pilots and dont worry about it.

you will be fine. maybe go out to dublin airport some time and watch the planes landing just to show you how safe they are.

I was petrified of flying for years (went to counselling etc) nothing worked until I did a course out at Dublin airport. It's run by Aer Lingus and British airways. It's pretty pricey (I think it was about 250 euro for the day) but it's definitley worth it. I've been all over since then.

The explain everything about the flight, give you relaxation techniques then take you on a flight around the island. The best part was that everyone on the course was in the same boat so you didn't feel stupid asking questions about noises or sensations on the plane.

    You should check them out:)

Yeah, I think it's the noises/vibrations that freak out a lot of people. I guess these same people would be much more relaxed if they knew what the noises/vibrations were etc.

But perhaps it's being in a confined space or the lack of control?

To be honest, I'd happily strap myself to the wing of a plane flying at 10,000 feet, so I can't really offer too much practical advice.

What is it spefically that causes the fear? Think about that, and you'll have a better idea of how to tackle it.
