I have a VW Golf 1.9 TDi 2004 and I think the Turbo is about to give up. At the moment there is no loss of power but a loud whine on acceleration that sounds like a Jet engine. Does anyone have any idea what is causing the whine ? More so if it is going to blow, what is the cost to replace ? Thanks all.

not necessarily, you may be just loosing boost from some of the pipes.

As said prob a vacum/boost pipe with a small leak. Check for excess black smoke on WOT.

Check the tubes coming from the turbo to the precooler to see if they separated/loose, or maybe the tube that runs up after the precooler along the accessory belt on the front passenger side of the engine bay. If any contact with the belt pulley may have put a hole in it.

I had a diagnostic check and it seems there isn't a problem with the Turbo or the EGR valve. The mechanic says it's most likely a gasket on the Turbo causing the problem. Thanks for the replies everyone. Will post when I solve the problem. Cheers

There is a tensioner for the alternator on these that often gives a whine noise and needs to be replaced, you wouldn't get a whine from a turbo imo.

Unfortunately, the whine is coming from around the Turbo

That tensioner is not like a wheel its a big bracket and is not that far from the turbo to be honest, in line with it but obviously 18 inches or so below.
