Think I disturbed potential car thiefs this morning

I was out for a run early in the Phoenix Park this morning. I had parked my car in a secluded spot where there isn't much traffic, both car or pedestrian. However as I was finishing my run, I noticed another car parked close to mine through the trees. I saw one guy standing about 10 feet away from my car looking towards the road while his female friend was walking round my car looking in the windows. She was saying something to the guy and pointing inside my car. At this point, he saw me approaching from behind her, he said something and she whirled around.

I asked what was she looking at my car for and she said, in an eastern European accent, she was looking for the zoo. This was more than a little suspect as the zoo is at the far end of the Park and it was only 7am. I asked her again why she was looking into my car and she started to back off towards where her own car was parked. The boyfriend had gotten into their car at this point and had the engine running, she jumped in and they sped away.

Think I had a lucky escape there. I have their car reg but as they didn't actually do anything, I'm sure the boys in blue wouldn't follow it up if I did decide to report it. Must park in a busier spot in future.

    I would report it anyway.
You'ld never know. It might be the call that they were waiting on!

Report it - might save someone else from a smashed window, contents stolen and maybe even the car being stolen...

Call it in. They could get you again tomorrow knowing what time you get back from your run.

Definitely report it anyway. Sometimes when you report something that never became a crime it adds evidence to a different crime committed.

I once reported a suspicious event that happened at my home, turned out the person involved had been picked up for trespassing and attempted theft later that day and was in court the next morning, my call was added to the evidence against her.

Report it....bouys in blue like a dossier on these skang bags. No doubt if u came back 15 mins later, either the contents of your cars would be gone or worse the car. Close one.

As already stated I'd report it. If that car is spotted beside a break in later on, but a witness isn't lucky enough to get the registration then your information could become very important.

You should have took a pic of them and send it to the boys in blue along with your report.

I won't be parking there again as it is too isolated. A guy I work with thinks I was very lucky they didn't pull a knife or worse and demand the keycard from me. If it had been a gang of men, I'd have stood no chance if they had a go (all macho bs aside), and I'd have gotten no assistance either due to where I was parked.

I'll call the cops and see what they say. I have the reg, car make and model and a good description of the girl and a reasonable one of her boyfriend.

100% report it, tell them that you caught them about to break in an they fled in the car.

there has been a spate of car thefts in the park over the last month or soo, quite literally 10 cars a day are getting done while the owners are in the zoo etc

gardai say its the zoo problem as they have no official car park, and the OPW say they cannot provide a security guard as such, so OP, you may have just caught who is responsible for them.

    so please report it.

.......... A guy I work with thinks I was very lucky they didn't pull a knife or worse and demand the keycard from me. ............

I think you shouldn't be overly worried about that, nor the gang of men scenario.

I think he should report exactly what happened.

definitely report it. they could already have the reg on record if previous instances were reported. it will give the gards reason to pull the car and search if they see it about.

As pretty much everyone has said report it...

Nothing bad can come of reporting it, but maybe just maybe you help someone else which is a good thing. It'll only take a minute ;)

Mind letting us know the model and colour, I'm in the park quite a bit and have seen this kind of thing around the Pope's cross and at the chaplelizord gate.
Car was done at that gate on Thursday, if Mods have an issue with this let me know, maybe pm me, I have a couple in mind.

I asked what was she looking at my car for and she said, in an eastern European accent, .

Where would be eastern European accent from?
There is quiet a few countries in eastern Europe, and every has different accent.

I reported something like this once and got told by the Gardaí to 'stop wasting their time'

    yep.

And we all would have not problem distinguishing them in a stressful situation at 7am... no bother at all...

If someone has problem distinguising them, so how would he know if it was eastern European?

You obviously know quite a few Easterners. Not everybody has the same experience and trying to tell the difference between the Slavic accents of Russian, Slovak, Czech, Polski, Bosnian, Bulgarian etc.. might not be to everybody's ability. Having heard one though you can approximate the region its from, the same with any of the Scandinavian languages.

Oh FFS.. must a legitimate thread that (who knows) could be related to the recent spate of car break-ins and thefts be dragged down by this PC bull**** every time??!!

Just because the OP said that the 2 people involved sounded "eastern european" doesn't make him a racist!!

Sorry but this kinda PC crap (that has successfully derailed the last few posts) really grates on me!

I never said anything about racism.

I just wanted to point out, that there isn't such thing as "eastern European accent".

The same you could say that someone had southern European accent.

What would that be? Spanish, Italian, Croatian, Greek, or maybe Turkish.

Those accents are completely different, and if someone tell me that someone had southern European accent I know that such person has no clue where accent was from.

    The same in this thread.
When OP claims person had eastern European accent, I don't believe that he knows actually anything about where that person was from. Could be the same someone from Europe as from Asia, Africa, etc...

In incidents such as this stating 'eastern European accent' is to help with identification. It's a generalisation in the same way as tall, short, dark hair, light hair, fair complextion, etc.. the guards need to begin with this kind of general info..... most witnesses to crime are not versed inethnic, linguistic or cultural studies...............

If someone said "they had an American accent", would you be insisting that the OP stated whether they were from Texas or New York?

If not, then please leave it alone.

"American" in general means "from USA".
In that case "American accent" is precise enough. They all speak English in US, and their accents are similar enough.

In eastern Europe, there is many countries, who speak completely different languages, very often from complete different group of languages. Difference between Polish and Hungarian accent, would be the same or bigger than difference between Irish and Chinese.
You wouldn't put those two accents (Irish and Chinese) into one group though.

I'm leaving it alone now as you asked. Won't write anything more about it.

Just wanted to point out, that there isn't such thing as "eastern European accent".

There has been a spate of car break ins in the park lately, threads have popped up all over the place, from the ART forum to the Dublin City one. These victims would have already reported the crime to the gardai so a description and car reg could come in very handy to the gardai. It's been happening the full length of the park, from the zoo car park, the papal cross and the Castleknock gate.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 448 ✭✭gerarda

Please report it! You could be doing the garda and a lot of people a huge favour! I use and park in the park very regularly but wont park there now. I leave absolutely nothing in it and have a big chain and padlock around the steering wheel and seat frame.

As long as I remember and that's long, the phoenix park has long been a dodgy place to leave ones car. There's all types of wildlife up there in every sense of the word.

Wouldn't agree, I use the park a lot over the years and it always has been relatively safe for parking, scum tend to be thin on the ground too.

Always felt there has been dodgy characters lurking around in the park in the early/late hours. Maybe its paranoia with middle age thrown in.

Worth reporting to the park wardents. Aren't they the official police in there? They might take it more serious too because they have more time on their hands.

Having worked in the park for a contract i can vouch that these guys are as much use as a chocolate teapot, seemed to spend an inordinate amount of time cruising about looking for people parked a bit funny so they could stick some no parking thing on the car and drive off. The ironically enough they would abandon the work vehicle up on the footpath beside the pedestrian entrance to the hole in the wall pub for a couple of hours a day.
