Just a question that came up the other day (moot now).

Does anyone know if a TD could nominate two people as presidential candidates? On a straight reading of the Constitution, I don't see why not.
2° Every candidate for election, not a former or retiring President, must be nominated either by:

    i. not less than twenty persons, each of whom is at the time a member of one of the Houses of the Oireachtas, or

ii. by the Councils of not less than four administrative Counties (including County Boroughs) as defined by law.

Good question. AFAIK the councils can only nominate 1 candidate.

However, on this topic there's been a lot of talking about reforming the system as the current one has failed. I don't think it has - we have 7 candidates in the field and if FF had of bothered we could have had 8. Pretty large selection by any standards.

    But the next article states

3° No person and no such Council shall be entitled to subscribe to the nomination of more than one candidate in respect of the same election.

I think that is clear enough.

Fianna Fail did bother. His name is Sean Gallagher.
