Any swim coaches who swim in Northwood?

Are there any swim coaches who happen to swim in the Ben Dunne Gym in Northwood? I'd like to get some technique help this winter and it would be really handy if we both happened to use Northwood. I'm happy to pay of course!

Ive seen a woman there now and then early in the mornings (7am). YOur best bet would be to ask the reception who she is.

I've seen her as well - goal of her coaching seemed to be the avoidance of drowning.

Is that a reflection of her coaching ability or the swimming ability of her pupils??

    Good point.

What standard are the various people who want coaching at?

I'm middling I suppose. I would do around 15 minutes for 750m in open water now but I'd like to get much closer to 12-13 minutes. I improved from around 18 to 15 minutes this year, looking to hit the next level (or 2!).

A "swimming coach" in Northwoord will be feck all use imho then.

Its a little obviously that the owners and staff of northwood do not *get* swimming. One of the worst pools I've had the misfortune to use. (And will have to continue using)

+1, and Ive seen most/alot of pools in Dublin.
With this sort of support from the gym management its soap-on-a-rope style swims dealing with decaying seal like individuals swimming / walking in the middle of lanes that deem anyone else swimming to be a nuisance.

Make a few phone calls to some of the other pools in north dublin, typically there'll be a number of coaches that regularly hire pool time. You wont necessarily need to be a member of that pool or gym to utilise a coach / swim teacher that works out of another pool.

Plus do you need a coach or just someone who will correct the obvious flaws?

I've "heard" there is swimming "coaching"/technique help in Belvedere pool on Wednesdays..........maybe someone else can clarify on this.

Slightly off-topic but when you're semi-happy with your swim technique and want to build up your distances and speed. 7am lane swims in Markeveitz kick ass!!

It's mainly some technique help for now, so I guess it's flaws and efficiency rather than coaching for sessions right now. I'd like to concentrate on technique for now and only build up major distance when I'm more efficient. Otherwise I'll only be ingraining poor technique.

Re: Northwood, I'm actually pretty happy with the pool in most respects. It's clean and new and I like how quiet and kid-free it is and that there are 3 permanent swim lanes down.

The things that do bug me are there can be slow swimmers clogging up up lanes, it would be great to have a fast and slow lane perhaps. There was a guy who couldn't swim a lane there recently but in fairness the staff member did back me up and insist that people swim full lengths. There is a sign up saying "no flippers" but I have discreetly used fins a few times without a problem.

I usually swim in the evenings so I don't know what the early morning and daytimes are like. Anyone know?

Would Markievich pool be a decent place for a few lessons?

I can swim no problem but would like a few pointers in technique before building up distance. Or would it better to book a one on one session say once a month to chart progress?

I was thinking of joining the NAC Masters, does anyone know if they have some technique coaching?

Its fvcking brutal. I tried to swim there for a while. Jammed with people who think they can swim fast but can't swim really. Lanes all over the place. Stuff always broken and never fixed (pool clock for starters). Dirty as fvck.

Best bit was you couldn't be sure if it would actually open in the mornings. If staff didn't show it didn't open. (Being a corpo pool no one gets disciplined if this happens so it happens alot).

Alot of boardsies have tried to use this pool and I think most have come to the same conclusions. Its sh!t - avoid it.

It's a great pool, I swim at 7 every morning and it's always open as a competitive swim club use it from 5 am. It's spotless clean and I've never found it crowded which could be s result of the recession.

Yeah, I've started swimming with them recently - we get two hours in before the pool opens to the public. I'm never really there during the day so I can't comment on the hygiene, crowdedness (is that a word) etc. I also swam with that 7am group for a bit during the summer when the pool in Trinity was closed - they are a good group for someone interested in fitness but not if you want to improve your technique.
