Its pointless. Not in a depressed type of way but its silly. Nothing any of us has done or will do actually matters at all in any way.

    Quote from Sydney Harris.

If you substituted the word silly for hard the same thinking might apply.

Not kind, but true. This vacant feeling leaves much room for freedom of expression and purpose.

Yeah but one day that baby will also die and nothing it ever does will actually matter.

i think its obsurd that we take part in it involuntarily in that we were never consented on weather we wanted to be here or not. another obsurd thing is that we seek to control every aspect of our lives from careers to children and so on. and finally most people have some expectations from life. im not really sure what we are supposed to be doing here, so yes, becasue of this life is obsurd.

Not exactly true... Maybe that baby will grow up and cure cancer, maybe another baby will grow up and save your child from an accident, be it as a nurse, a doctor, a passer by who sees them in trouble... It's random...
Because things don't make sense now, doesn't really matter, cause tomorrow (or next year) maybe it'll be better... We all get bored from time to time, and in that boredom we contemplate things... Get interested in something that'll fill up your time, who knows where it'll lead...

What matters is relevant. You could get hit by a bus tomorrow and it wouldnt matter to me, but I'm sure it'd matter a whole lot to your friends and family.

If I die knowing I've made just one persons life just a little bit happier, I'll die knowing I done something that matters.

Surely life cannot be as pointless as being dead, as not existing. While you are alive your actions have an influence on all those who interact with you.

Of course the things that you have done and will do matter.

Think of things that happened years ago. Some random act of kindness, some random act of hatred that still affects you many years later. What yo do, how you relate to other people has a profound affect even many years after you have ceased to exist.

For instance, if you have a kid, that kid looks to you as their mother or father, no matter how ****ed up you are they learn their behaviour from you and want to be like you. So what you do does matter, your choices do have consequences.

    Yes, quite frequently.

The 'matters' thing, I get the sense that youre meaning something you do needs to matter to somebody in the future or be of some future consequence....consequence can really only be related to other living beings.

Future humans will look upon your/mine/everyone elses memory in the way we look on some obscure reference in an old library book, with a big big 'Meh'

I say frock mr/mrs future person (to a degree). It would be a one sided relationship, like 'oh please please remember me' vs 'meh 3d porn is better'.

None of us are really going to be remembered beyond maybe 1, 2 generations.
Even if it was 100 you'd never know anything about it.

so basically - yes life is ultimately inconsequential to others in the future.

ergo - fukc them, i define my own consequence. in the now.

In the words of Fr Fintan Stack .....I had my fun, and thats all that matters.

It's a difficult question fo sho.

I think about the Wright brothers who left us the legacy of powered flight. We can now visit any part of the planet within 24 hours for a reasonable price because of those guys.

Effectively they will be alive forever in people's minds.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 38 flyboy69

There is no reason and it is pointless, but once you grasp that, it becomes easier to accept in a strange kind of way!

I think I did mention that my OP was not in a depressed type of way. As for a baby growing up to cure cancer, that doesnt really matter either. If some baby grows up to be the next Hitler, it doesnt matter.

    Fair enough...

But this is what I was referring to.... we all matter in some way or another to someone is what I was pointing out.

Also, if some baby grew up to be the next hitler I think that would matter!!!

why does this matter? just shut up and get a job! who has time to think about stuff like this?
