Get a 1 litre if you want it cheap, starting at a 1.4 will cost extra, maybe €500 extra. Also be aware that if your mother is not the main driver but is named as such your insurance may be void if the insurance company find out.

    Get a 10yo Micra.

A golf/civic/corolla will murder you on insurance at that age (a mate of mine was screwed on a 1.4vvti corolla when he was 17)

Get a little 1.0L polo and start there. Then work your way up when youre older :)

I bought my missus her first car the other week to learn how to drive in. Her insurance was around €450 fully comp with cornmarket for a 1997 Toyota starlet 1.3.

I wouldn't bother with a Polo, they're not the most reliable. Try a Micra, Yaris or if you're feeling leftfield a Daihatsu Sirion. They're all old school reliable, 1.0l simple Japanese cars.

My son was 17 when he got his 1st car,the car was recommended by a boardsie here and it was the best buy ever a Toyota Starlet 1.3 one owner 29,000 mls because he took 10 driving lessons his instructor told him where the best place was to apply for his insurance in his own name it was €1900 3rd party fire and theft it was through a broker. The quotes I first got were €3,000-€4500 from well known companies here.He is now 18 passed his test 1st time on his 18th:D His insurance now is less than €1000 consisting of a no claims bonus driver experience and full Licence
I think personaly you would be better with your own policy you build up your own bouses etc that way:)
Good luck with your new car and stay safe;)

The three cars you have mentioned are a haven for boy/girl racers. You will be loaded to the eyeballs.

As what was mentioned here, go for a smaller engined car, starlet, micra, toyota aygo/citreon c1 or a peugeot 206

As with every new driver, I recommend a Ford Fiesta 1.25 Zetec......

    Cheap to buy,
    Cheap to run,
    Cheap to Insure,
Look decent with a decent set of Ford alloys,
Plenty quick enough for a new driver,

Easy to fix if they go wrong as there's so many around.

I'm 17 and did exactly the above 'cept mine is a 1.3 Van

Don't spend more than €1k (Mine was €100 but it needed work), save up, earn your No Claims and buy something decent in two years.

When you say Golf? You realise that there are lots of different golfs(what year are you talking?). 1.4 crapbox, 1.9TDI,2.0 TDI, GTI, R32. All very different cars. My advise-Clio.I started on a Clio-No trouble whatsoever. And whats fairly cheap to you? 2 grand or 20 grand?;)

A starlet 1.3 is a great little starter car. But these days Irish spec only as the japanese import ones seem to have suffered big hikes insurance-wise. There's a few reasons for that including more power, more extras, different spec and the amount of them that aren't what they say they are (turbo version registered as non turbo).

Once kept well you will always be able to sell on a starlet and they're very reliable and easy to look after.

Fiestas can be cheap to run and cheap to insure too, and i like them personally for that "cheap runaround"/starter car bracket but they havn't got the cult following or percieved legendary reliability the starlets have (starlet deserves it mostly but a well looked after fiesta mk3/mk4 is unlikely to let you down either and doesnt suffer so much from the possible boy racer connotations)

i started off with a 1.3 starlet:) brillaint car can honestly say it didnt give me 1 bit of trouble!!:) there fairly cheap to buy too:)

thinking of getting a 2nd car for the long weekend drives and a starlet is ticking all the boxes for me AGAIN:)

Insurance premiums are calculated on the person being insured just as much as the car they are driving. But at 17 and will no rprevious driving experience alot of insurance companies will probably put limitations such as engine size or bhp on what they will quote you. Either way it ain't going to be cheap.

My polo is reliable. Most were treated crap because of the misconception of "German cars go forever" and people took that to mean that they didn't need to be serviced as much.

Anywho! Small car = small insurance. Some cars buck this trend. I could get insured on a 1.8 laguna for the same price as my polo starting out!

would advise against getting a 10 year old car - a lot of insurance companies dont quote for older cars.

have 3 cars in mind when ringing for quotes and ask for quotes on the 3 of them.

And yes, some smaller cars get high rates if they are viewed as 'boy racer' cars. every insurance company is different.

Aviva do a deal where if your mother takes a policy out (might only be €400 roughly) - and you agree to take 10 lessons (€500 roughly) - you get your first 6 months cover free.

Would I get a ban for suggesting the Corsa from the "False info(Log book)" thread? :pac:
