wouldn't wish injury on anyone but this would open the tournament right up, SA or Oz would have to fancy their chance against the Kiwi's much more.

that plus France playing like a junior rugby team making our side of the draw look easier.....is it too early to dream??:D

possibly some wishful thinking by bbc and smh in that he'll be gone for rest of WC, but groin injuries can take time and wouldn't want to be kicking with one

The relatively inexperienced Slade will get another game so.

Drew Mitchell out of the world cup for the Wallabies.

NZ are very lucky they'll probably have Argentina in the quarters. If they were going to face one of the stronger teams they'd have a serious fight on their hands. Carter doubtful for the QF and McCaw having injury issues too. Lose both of them and it's an even match.

SA having lost F. Steyn will hurt them too though. In the knock outs, every point will count and he can usually be counted on for a couple of massive kicks.

still, if you've got a few injury worries 80 minutes in a slug fest with argentina isnt an ideal scenario!

As POC well knows. Wouldn't want to wish injury on anyone but it would really blow the competition wide open.

if carter does have a groin injury its very serious. a groin injury is a nasty one because it takes ages for it to come right

The groin is a poxy place to get injured as it really stops you from doing anything. From the above pic off the BBC website it looks like it was more than a minor injury. Of course if he got up after the pic and walked about it could be a different story altogether.

I think Argentina will give NZ a very good work out in the quarters especially if Contepomi has one of his games, you know, the ones where he is unstoppable!

Also looks like Franz Steyn is going home, reports in SA are saying he's finished

Footage of Carter hobbling off the pitch here: http://tvnz.co.nz/all-blacks/mccaw-and-carter-injury-blows-4 429909

Looks pretty bad to me. I got a few Groin strains in my time, but they never came with acute pain like this one, suspect it's a tear.

i'd prefer if we beat the all blacks in the final with Carter playing. :D

Fitzpatrick on itv reckoned he would be ok, said he had word from inside the camp that it is not too bad,of course that could be PR too..

Anyone know why Aaron Crudden wasn't in their squad? I know he's inexperienced but he played well against Ireland in summer 2010 and was very impressive in the u-20 world cup.

That didn't look too good at all. Especially if he did it in such an explosive manoeuvre like kicking a ball. If he is fit for next week it could cause problems for him goal kicking which means who is the back up kicker? I know Weepu can but he may not start, can Dagg?

Interesting to note that Carter would have been captain with McCaw out. Anyone know who would lead the Haka if Weepu isn't in the squad?

I'd be fairly sure it would fall to Kevin Mealamu going on past leaders.

A grade 1 groin strain would not effect your walking too much, in fact you may not even notice it until the following day with the muscle warmed up.
Should return within a week if its not niggling.

A grade 2 is a different story, will effect you walking and can be very painful.
looks to be his left leg, he is left footed isnt he? could effect his kicking.
2-4 weeks out with a grade 2 strain.

He was in the extended training squad along with Slade before the WC afaik and Slade got the nod as back up for Carter.

Can't buy into this talk of the World Cup being wide open if Carter is out. Personally I think the tournament is wide open anyway but with the class NZ have, they still pose almost as much of a threat. My biggest worry for NZ, with or without Dan The Man, is their mental fragility as they move into the knockout stages.

A friend of mine living in NZ tells me the rumour going around is that he will be out of action till the final or the semi at a stretch.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,071 ✭✭✭Conas

I wouldn't be suprised if this was some sort of stunt to be honest, and I really mean that.

Words can't describe what a blow that is to NZ.

Are the planets aligning for Ireland? Carter out, France playing like a team of window licking buffoons; this could well be our best shot at grabbing the trophy.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 5,592 ✭✭✭GerM

    NZ favourites? *tick*
Looking very good in the pools? *tick*
Other pools giving them knock out games that weren't expected? *tick*
    Carter injured? *tick*

    All falling into place....

Aaron Cruden to be called into the squad probably, only a handful of caps for nz to date.

its a loss for the tournament, we all want to see the best players

I agree with this up until a point. If Carter being injured means Ireland have a shout in the final (I know I'm thinking way too far ahead - indulge me) then so long Dan - don't let the door hit you on the way out.:pac::pac::pac:

Can we ban anybody who puts Ireland and final in the same sentence? Do not look past tomorrow.

I feel sympathy for Carter if the rumour is true but I would have thought it would have been a difficult ask to beat SA anyway.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,415 ✭✭✭Lord Trollington

Psychologically if nothing else it's a huge blow for NZ and a massive lift for other teams that may face them as the task is no longer as daunting as it once was.

Momentum will be a big thing over the coming weeks as it's knockout rugby and the wind has been taken out of NZ sails with this news.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,033 ✭✭✭✭Richard Hillman

Unbelievable news. This is HUGE! As soon as the replacement kicker misses a few kicks the All Blacks will start to doubt themselves :D

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 36 Tweedo

No matter who replaces Carter, he is going to be a massive loss. Never wish injury on anyone, but maybe this is good for the tournament in that it makes it more open

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 12,455 ✭✭✭✭Monty Burnz

Oddly enough, this means that I can feel justified in starting to cheer for NZ as my second team. It's almost like they've become...underdogs

From any headline I've seen he has a possible groin injury and is being rested for the next match. And they don't know anymore until the results if his scans are back ?

Have to feel bad for Carter. He's going to be almost 34 at the next one. This was his tournament. He didn't get a chance to stamp his authority on the cup and won't really be remembered for anything but being injured. Third WC and two cut by injury with the other taking place before he had got a shot at taking the 10 jersey. He must be absolutely inconsolable.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,463 ✭✭✭Kiwi_knock

That really weakens the NZ team, and gives great confidence to the teams they go up against. NZ will be hoping Slade puts in a good performance against Canada, he will need to start building up the confidence. NZ are in a way lucky that this injury happened now as they have the winnable games against Canada and Argentina first before they have to face a top tier nation. They will hope by then Slade will have gained confidence and be fully fitted into the team.

I think Henry will regret the decision not to bring Donald or McAlister.

It is disappointing for Carter, and a shame for the tournament.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 4,656 ✭✭✭cgpg5

Why do we keep mentioning World Cup final? We have a game in a few hours which will be very tough and will really prove what kind of a team we are. Italy will fancy their chances against us, of that there is no doubt. We haven't even made quarter final yet! We've won one game ffs! Maybe if we go out and beat Wales in a quarter we can start dreaming.

I'm sorry for Carter he's a world class talent, and will be a massive loss for NZ and for the tournament, he's a great player to watch. Wish him well.

Aaron Cruden to be called into the squad probably, only a handful of caps for nz to date.

I know they have a policy to pick only domestic based players, but I wonder if they were tempted to call up Nick Evans from Quins. He's probably their next best 10 and has far more experience than Slade or Crudden.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 20,553 ✭✭✭✭Dempsey

Poor Dan Carter, his legacy ruined in the cruellest of manners.

Slade has probably shít himself, twice. I cannot seem him handling the pressure if it comes down to kicking considering the problems that quality kickers are having throughout the tournament.

The tournament springs open a fair bit, all the other teams will be encouraged by the news!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 5,592 ✭✭✭GerM

NZ doctor has confirmed that the injury was a torn tendon within the groin. I can only imagine that is bloody sore.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,715 ✭✭✭DB21

In response to those wondering why we're talking about a final; It's called optimism. Just because certain pundits refuse to show it, doesn't mean the rest of us can't dream. I'm well aware we still have to face 3 teams on the way, but Ireland have hit serious form now.
