The Motorola Xoom, and Asus Transformer are just out of budget, but could drop again soon...

Have seen a lot about this xoom it sounds pretty good maybe i would go up a bit if it was worth it still am finding it hard to justify too much its his first gadget after his playstation just starting to show interest in tablets

Can't go wrong with xoom or asus transformer to be honest.
There's loads of cheaper ones out there but the majority of them are crap. Since the chap is only 12 I imagine the xoom or transformer could be worth upping the budget a bit if you can as they will last longer than the low budget tablets.

My 11 year old uses the transformer and the one thing that makes the difference with it is the keyboard. If there is ANY data entry the physical keyboard wins hands down every time, especially for younger users.

Motorola have a promotion at the moment for a free keyboard & mouse.

It doesn't work for me though. Bought my Xoom in the US in April. :(

Although the reason for the Xooms cheap price is probably that the Xoom 2 will be released soon (nobody knows how soon, might be after Christmas). So it's something to bear in mind. In my opinion it makes no difference, it's a great price for a Honeycomb tablet. Some people care about stuff like that though.
