I'm after switching to saorview here and the reception is brutal. all today no satellite signal and it has to do with the weather i think!
Anybody else having problems with it? I never had any problems with the old analogue system but having a rake of problems now!
Honestly why would RTE switch to an unreliable means of transmission!! I hope they sort this out

    No we're using our antenna!

Satellite? All you need is an aerial for saorview. And a digital signal gives you perfect reception even in areas were analogue gave grainy images.

That's because you still need a terrestrial aerial to view saorview, it isn't satellite. It's working grand for me. Great picture in comparison to the old analogue.

sorry i made a mistake in saying satellite. We;re using our old aerial and getting problems. I don't know if its location or weather! most of the time its fine but its very frustrating when it is bad! one night it froze for an hour

Just the saorview box connected to the antenna outside the house if that helps?

Once it rains I lose Saorview reception (I'm using antenna not a dish).

Why the hell can't your digital signal go through rain RTE ??

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 88,972 ✭✭✭✭mike65

How is your RTE "HD"? The rest are SD and very soft pictures indeed.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 622 ✭✭✭sandmanporto

    Its a TR112 receiver

is the antenna inside or roof mounted ? , if its roof mounted your masthead amp could be a VHF one or could be faulty , new antennas and UHF masthead amps are quite cheap and for less than 100 you could have the whole lot done including new cabling that would give a much better signal

ive noticed this aswell - during bad weather i lose the signal altogther also for some reason the signal gets jumpy at about 11pm every night.
is it related to the number of users or something - its almost like it cant handle the traffic during busy periods.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 26,280 ✭✭✭✭Eric Cartman

    Its a TR112 receiver

its not the receiver then ,triax are excellent units

Saorview is the service, not the digital receiver. Most digital receivers can tune into saorview. If you never had a problem with the aerial before, then it's probably the type of receiver you bought. I'm using a small cheap set top aerial connected to a Triax digital combi receiver and I have no problem getting saorview.

the antenna is probably set up incorrectly , during clear weather getting a signal is easy enough but with rain and clouds it becomes harder for radio waves to reach every direction , a decent multi element UHF antenna on your roof and a masthead amp in the attic aswell as propper cabling (CT100) would see you right

what was your reception like with analogue?

Triax's digital receivers and combi receivers aren't the best really. They get the job done, but barely. Crap menu and very slow.

Reception was great and consistent with analogue.
to the other replies you could be right. it could be the aerial. Must check it out

ok thanks thats probably what it is then - im in an appartment block so cant stick an antenna outside. i got one sitting on my floor pointing out the window instead :pac: saves on getting upc anyways i switch over to freesat when it dies.

they arent the best but they are excellent receivers for the price , they have nice functionality and arent layed out too badly, the software was at a loss for a while, but the new combi DVB-T / Sat receiver is an indicator of the direction their going and the software on those is much improved

look at other antennas on nearby roofs and see where they are pointing , get a small UHF antenna and make up a bracket to hang it just outside the window and face it the same way

Maybe you're using a VHF aerial or else it's facing towards the wrong transmitter. Not every analogue site carries Saorview and some Saorview sites never carried analogue (e.g. Kilduff and Knockanore).

If you got a good reception on tv3 with the old analogue system then the aerial is okay

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,215 ✭✭✭galah

while we're at it...: if I don't get a saorview box and thusly cannot receive any of the Irish channels, do I still have to pay for a tele license?

Does RTE have any plans to provide their offerings through satellite at any point? (already have a dish anyway, and am not keen to get another box just for the craic of it...)

Yes, the licence is for the tv, if you have one you need one

Yes, but not on the same satellite as Sky and the other free to air channels. You would need to re-allign your dish or get a second

And of course a different LNB for Ka-band (and possibly a new dish as Ka-band may not work the best on the perforated Sky Minidish). The satellite service, Saorsat, will be primarily to service the few percent of the population that cannot receive it by terrestrial transmitters.

that'll be us then...(can only get one Irish channel at the moment, and not even TG4 even though I can pretty much SEE the station from here...njarg).

    Thanks for that.

However, I always thought that license was to fund the Irish channels - but if I can't even 'enjoy' them, it's a bit mean to make me pay, isn't it?

Isn't a TV defined as something capable of receiving RTÉ? Surely after analogue switch-off, a TV set with only an analogue tuner could no longer be considered as such?

    Possibly.

Tesco are still selling them to the un-suspecting. I was in there the other day and lots were advertised as Freeview compatible, meaning they're not at all Saorview compatible

Sadly it sounds like you are living in a weak signal area and its directed in the wrong direction. But dont worry can easily be fixed :)

You could easily buy a chaep UHF meter finder to help you out but they are crap and useless. But best to take a look at tvtrade.ie's image here I assume you live in Dublin. So anyone in Dublin will point towards three rock. I live in North Dublin. And I get an amazing signal strenth pointed at it. If you are unsure where three rock is ... its pretty much the tallaght/wicklow mountains.

Is it installed high up / roof level? or ground level?

I just have a small plastic aerial I got for €10 and the channels are all perfect digital quality reception. Love it. Best tenner I ever spent. (Wish I had Sky) :-p
