Devilling!

    Can anyone please tell me the position with devilling after becoming a barrister?I mean is it compulsory?Is it possible to skip that and involved in some kind of admin job.please suggest the options available.thank you.

    To the best of my knowledge all newly qualified Barristers must spend a period devilling if they wish to practice , I'm not aware of exceptions to this ?

    oh yah i know.what if i do not wish to practice but wants to do administrative job?

    Then you don't have to devil. Only practising barristers have to devil.

    okk,thanx.do u think there will be many options available if i intend not to practice?also there are many newly qualified practicing barristers struggling for work.the fact is i want to be a barrister but cant afford to work for nothing for a year.just wondering about the alternatives...

    OP , I'm not sure I understand your position - you either wish to practice as a Barrister or you don't , if you want to practice then you must do a period Devilling. If you don't wish to practice then it not an issue.
    Perhaps work at something to build up funds to enable you to do the unpaid work ?

    you have to do at least one year, but most people do two years. however, a lot of devils take on part time work and have funds saved. it is also possible to get some of your own work during devilling, once you get to know enough solicitors, or other barrister who are too busy and hand you over some work
