Qualified Accountant- Career advice?

I qualified at the begining of the year and i trained in a very well known company in industry. IT and operations have been a large part of my experience to date. I'm looking to move onward and upward but feeling now like my training is not quite enough.

I started in accountancy by doing the accounting technicians course and then moving on to ACCA, never did a degree in anything business related but i did do one in something completely different. All my results have been fairly good and never failed an exam and feel i have had good training in industry, however any jobs i'm looking at seem to be aimed at corporate recovery or even industry jobs looking for practice experience. Now i have no inclination to get into audit but I think some time in a firm would benefit me.

My question is how can i get into one now. I'm not a graduate who is in need of a training contract or study leave. I don't think a practice would think i have the requisite skills or appeal to be just hired as a qualified accountant. How can i move on, i definately am well able its just that i didnt come to this career the way many of you did and maybe i'm lacking a bit of direction.

    Advice would be appreciated.

You could apply for one of the Big 4 firms. You would be applying for a Senior 1 or 2 position. There are often positions available for qualified people. There maybe a fairly steep learning curve at the start but it would not be impossible to overcome. Big 4 experience looks good on a CV and would make it easier to move on later. Check their websites and see if there is anything available. If you apply the worst that can happen is a rejection. If you don't want Audit you could apply for a tax or advisory position.
