Warning...You may be denied your statutory and other rights by civil servants at junior level and higher up including Chief Executive Officer level...

You may be turned down for BTEA and told it is not a statutory right and therefore have no avenue to apeal, scrutinise the social welfare website and find out if you qualify and if you find that you do...go back to the deciding officer and PERSIST. Same with the VEC (or local authority), check the Student Support Act 2011 and the Statutory Instruments and Persist, they may be telling you that you dont qualify for something when infact you do!

I'm not sure if it is deliberate or due to incompetence but I/we have been turned down for the BTEA for one college going 'child' for spurious reasons. I/we have also been turned down for the 'special/top-up rate' of grant for another college going 'child'. I've spent months trapped in a fog of bureaucratic boondoggle and am discovering that it is important to check everything even check that the person dealing with your case has calculated your 'reckonable income' correctly as I have found basic arithmetic errors have been part of our problem!!

Be careful of information provided by Citizens Information, heart in right place and all that but they gave us wrong information and it was too late to take remedial action when we discovered this.

I know how it feels to get a vague letter turning you down for something you thought you were entitled to but I just want to encourage people to check the legislation and guidelines for themselves because like I said even senior level civil servants for whatever reason have, in our case, tried to avoid paying us our entitlements.

Please don't suggest I put away my begging bowl, I'm just an ordinary lone parent trying to get two kids through college.
